What is Utrogestan?
Utrogestan capsules contain the active ingredient progesterone, which is a naturally occurring female sex hormone. Progesterone plays an important role in women’s menstrual cycle and fertility: it prepares the uterine lining for implantation of an embryo, is responsible for ovulation and helps keep periods regular. A shortage of progesterone can cause health issues such as reduced fertility and menstrual disorders.
What is Utrogestan used for?
Utrogestan is used to treat reduced fertility, irregular periods and heavy bleeding during periods. It is also used to alleviate menopausal symptoms such as night sweats, mood swings, irregular periods and sleep problems. The active ingredient supplements progesterone deficiency, which helps reduce or eliminate these symptoms.
How to use Utrogestan
Utrogestan is available in capsule form or as vaginal tablet. The capsules are typically used to treat irregular periods, menopausal symptoms and heavy bleeding. The vaginal tablets are mainly used in women with fertility problems. The capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of liquid. The tablets should be inserted into the vagina using the applicator provided. Consult the package leaflet for instructions on how to use the applicator. Depending on the disorder being treated, Utrogestan is usually taken during the second half of the menstrual cycle. The number of tablets to take, how often and for how long should be determined by a doctor.
Unless otherwise advised by the doctor, the recommended dose is:
- one dose 200-mg of Utrogestan taken orally or inserted vaginally before bedtime.
The doctor may prescribe an extra dose to take in the morning. This medicine is only intended for women. Always follow the prescribed dosage and read the package leaflet closely before use.
All medicines can cause side effects. The side effects that are known to be associated with Utrogestan include:
- Menstrual spotting or breakthrough bleeding. Most women’s periods will gradually become regular again. If bleeding or spotting is persistent, contact your doctor;
- Gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomach ache, nausea, diarrhoea or constipation. These side effects are usually only temporary and will disappear once the body adjusts to the medicine;
- Dizziness, sleepiness.
For a complete list of possible side effects, consult the package leaflet.
