What is Buscopan?
Buscopan contains the active ingredient hyoscine butylbromide, which is a type of medicine called an antispasmodic. It is used to relieve colicky abdominal pain by relaxing the smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal tract. This helps to reduce painful spasms in the stomach and intestines. Buscopan is available without prescription in tablet and suppository form. You can order Buscopan online through a Dokteronline.com partner pharmacy.
What is Buscopan used for?
Buscopan is used for spasms of the stomach, intestines or bile duct (gastrointestinal tract), including those associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is a disorder characterised by severe abdominal pain and cramping, alteration of bowel habits (alternating constipation and diarrhoea), bloating, flatulence and/or mucus-coated stools. Buscopan reduces these symptoms. It is absorbed directly in the intestines and works instantly.
How to use Buscopan
Buscopan is available online from our partner pharmacies in tablet or suppository form. The tablets should be swallowed whole with some water or milk. The suppositories are for anal use. See the package leaflet for instructions on how to insert the suppositories. The usual dose in adults and children aged six and above is:
- one to two tablets or suppositories of 10 mg, three to five times a day.
There are also low-dose suppositories (7.5 mg) available for children. Read the package leaflet before use.
Like all medicines, Buscopan can cause side effects. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine:
- Skin rash, itching or other allergic skin reactions;
- Faster than normal heart beat (tachycardia);
- Dry mouth.
Consult a doctor if the side effects are severe or persistent. For a complete list of possible side effects, see the package leaflet.
When not to use Buscopan
Buscopan should not be used if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or if you have a condition called myasthenia gravis which involves abnormal muscle weakness, an abnormally large or dilated large intestine (megacolon), or blockage in the intestines. Consult a doctor on the use of Buscopan if you have a health condition that is not listed here. It is also important to tell the doctor what other medicines you are taking to make sure the combination with Buscopan is safe. Do not use Buscopan if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without consulting a doctor first. For more information on these topics, see the package leaflet.
