What is Climaval?
Climaval is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) preparation for menopausal women. Climaval tablets contain the active ingredient estradiol, which is a naturally occurring form of the main female sex hormone oestrogen. Around the age of 45, women’s ovaries gradually stop producing oestrogen. This can cause physical and psychological symptoms. Climaval can be given as a supplement to replace the falling levels in the body to help reduce or eliminate the symptoms of menopause. Climaval is a prescription-only medicine.
What is Climaval used for?
The medicine is used to treat menopausal symptoms, including:
- Hot flashes;
- Night sweats;
- Depression, mood swings;
- Dryness of eyes and/or vagina;
- Osteoporosis (decrease in bone mass and density).
Climaval alleviates the symptoms of menopause within a few weeks. This medicine is only suitable for use in women with symptoms caused by lack of oestrogen, for example due to menopause or an ovariectomy.
How to use Climaval
Be sure to follow the doctor’s instructions for taking Climaval. Climaval tablets should be swallowed whole with water without chewing. They should be taken at roughly the same time each day. Climaval is available in convenient blister calendar packs marked with the days of the week. Climaval tablets should be taken back to back without a tablet-free interval, unless the doctor tells you otherwise. Women who have not had a hysterectomy should be prescribed a hormone to take with this medicine. This may alter the required dose of Climaval. For more information on the use of Climaval, see the package leaflet.
Unless otherwise advised by the doctor, the usual dose in adults is:
- one tablet once daily.
The doctor will tell you how long you need to take this medicine. Do not exceed the recommended dose and read the package leaflet closely before use.
Like all medicines, Climaval may cause side effects. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine:
- Breast tenderness or soreness;
- Gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomach ache, nausea or diarrhoea;
- Mood swings;
- Breakthrough bleeding, increase in vaginal discharge.
For more information on possible side effects, see the package leaflet. It is important to be aware that all women using HRT have an increased risk of being diagnosed with cancer and thrombosis compared with women who don’t use HRT. For more information, see the package leaflet.
