What is Cymbalta?
Cymbalta is an antidepressant that contains the active ingredient duloxetine hydrochloride. Duloxetine works by preventing the neurotransmitters serotonin and noradrenaline from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells in the brain. Brain nerve cells need neurotransmitters to send messages to each other. A shortage of neurotransmitters can lead to physiological and psychological problems. By preventing reabsorption, Cymbalta helps prolong the mood-lightening effect of any released serotonin and noradrenaline. This helps relieve depression, anxiety and other distressing emotions. Cymbalta is a prescription-only medicine.
What is Cymbalta used for?
Cymbalta is mainly used to treat depression and anxiety. It may also be used to treat nerve pain, urinary incontinence and muscle pain caused by fibromyalgia.
How to use Cymbalta
Cymbalta capsules should be swallowed whole, without chewing, with plenty of liquid. If taken once daily, the best time to take your capsule is in the morning. If taken more than once daily, it is important to space the doses evenly throughout the day. It may take some time before the effect of Cymbalta is noticed. In most cases, it takes two weeks for the medicine to reach full effect. If your symptoms have not improved after four to six weeks, you should contact a doctor to discuss alternative drug options.
Cymbalta is available in capsule form in two strengths: 30 mg and 60 mg. Strength, daily dose and duration must be determined by a doctor. The general recommended dose is:
- Adults: 60 mg once daily.
For anxiety disorders:
- Adults: 30 mg once daily.
The doctor may adjust this dose according to your body’s response to the medicine. The doctor may prescribe a different dose for conditions other than depression and anxiety. Cymbalta is not suitable for children under the age of 18. Read the package leaflet before use.
As with any medicines, Cymbalta may cause side effects, although some people do not experience any. Side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine include:
- Gastrointestinal symptoms;
- Sleepiness, drowsiness;
Most of these side effects will disappear once the body adjusts to the medicine. For more information on possible side effects, see the package leaflet.
When not to use Cymbalta
Cymbalta is not suitable for everyone and should not be used if:
- You are allergic to duloxetine or any other ingredient in this medicine;
- You are currently taking or have recently taken a type of medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI);
- You are using medicines that interact with Cymbalta (ask your doctor for a list of these medicines);
- You have a severe liver or kidney disease.
Consult your doctor on the use of Cymbalta if you have a disease or health-related condition that is not listed above. Always tell the doctor what medicines or nutritional supplements you are currently taking to make sure the combination is safe. For more information, see the package leaflet.
Do not use Cymbalta if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor to discuss alternative, safer drug options.
Cymbalta may cause side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness or sleepiness, especially in the initial phase of treatment. Avoid potentially hazardous tasks such as driving or operating machinery if you experience these symptoms.
Do not drink alcohol while taking Cymbalta as this is likely to worsen side effects such as drowsiness.
