What is Euthyrox used for?
Euthyrox is used for thyroid hormone replacement therapy in people whose thyroid gland is underactive (hypothyroidism). Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:
- Lack of energy;
- Increased sensitivity to cold;
- Slow movements and thoughts;
- Weight gain.
Levothyroxine replaces the thyroxine that would normally be produced naturally by the thyroid gland. This returns the levels to normal, which helps relieve or eliminate the above-mentioned symptoms. Euthyrox is sometimes also prescribed to manage overactivity of the thyroid gland. In such cases, Euthyrox is always used in combination with medicines that reduce thyroxine production in the thyroid gland.
How to use Euthyrox
Euthyrox tablets should be swallowed whole with plenty of liquid. For use in children, the tablet can be dissolved in water. Euthyrox tablets should preferably be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before breakfast.
