What is Faverin?
Faverin is known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), a type of medicine which has an effect on moods and emotions. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter: a chemical messenger between nerve cells. Serotonin deficiency is known to be associated with depression and anxiety. Faverin contains fluvoxamine, a medicine that increases the level of serotonin in the brain. This helps to reduce or altogether relieve depression or anxiety.
What is Faverin used for?
Antidepressants such as Faverin are used to treat depression. Doctors prescribe this medicine to treat a variety of anxiety disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and social phobia. In rare cases, it is also used to treat itching. Faverin is a prescription-only medicine.
How to use Faverin
Faverin tablets should be swallowed whole with some liquid. This medicine can be taken at any time of the day, with or without food. It may take several weeks to months for the benefits of this medicine to appear. If you feel your symptoms have not improved after 10 weeks, then you should talk to your doctor. It may be necessary to switch to a different drug. Do not stop taking Faverin suddenly, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms. Follow the instructions given by your doctor when it is time to stop treatment with this medicine.
Faverin is available in tablets of 50 mg and 100 mg. The exact strength should be determined by a doctor. The recommended dose for most anxiety disorders and types of depression is:
- Adults: 50 to 100 mg, once daily.
The doctor may gradually increase this dose. Faverin is not suitable for children under the age of 18, unless indicated by a doctor for obsessive-compulsive disorder. For this target group the dosage should be adapted accordingly. Read the package leaflet before use.
Like all medicines, Faverin may cause side effects. The most common ones include:
- Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, stomach ache, diarrhoea and constipation;
- Sexual dysfunction (loss of libido, delayed ejaculation);
- Drowsiness, sleepiness, dizziness;
- Dry mouth.
Most of these side effects will disappear once the body adjusts to the medicine. Consult a doctor if the side effects are severe or bothersome. For more information, see the package leaflet.
