What is Femoston-Conti?
Femoston-Conti is a hormone preparation that relieves menopausal symptoms. This type of treatment is known as hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Femoston-Conti contains two active ingredients, estradiol and dydrogesterone, which are forms of the main female sex hormones oestrogen and progestogen. These hormones replace the falling levels of hormones in the body and reduce the symptoms of menopause. Femoston-Conti is a prescription-only medicine.
What is Femoston-Conti used for?
Femoston-Conti is used to treat a wide range of menopausal symptoms, including:
- Hot flashes;
- Night sweats;
- Dryness of mucous membranes (eyes, vagina and/or mouth);
- Irritability, mood swings;
- Loss of libido (sex drive);
- Osteoporosis (decrease in bone mass and density).
The estradiol in Femoston-Conti relieves menopausal symptoms. Dydrogesterone is added to protect the uterus from side effects such as endometrial cancer. Each Femoston-Conti tablet contains a low dose of both hormones. This type of HRT does not produce a monthly withdrawal bleed, and so is more suitable for women whose periods have already stopped or women who have not had a period for at least 12 months.
How to use Femoston-Conti
Femoston-Conti tablets should be swallowed whole with some water without chewing. They can be taken with or without food. Femoston-Conti is available in blister packs containing 28 tablets. The tablets should be taken back to back without a tablet-free interval. Femoston-Conti does not cause a monthly withdrawal bleed, but you may experience spotting or breakthrough bleeding during the first few months of treatment. For more information on how to use Femoston-Conti, see the package leaflet.
Unless otherwise advised by the doctor, the usual dose in adult women is:
- one tablet once daily.
Do not exceed the recommended dose and read the package leaflet carefully before use.
Femoston-Conti may cause side effects, including:
- Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or stomach ache;
- Breakthrough bleeding;
- Vaginal discharge;
- Breast tenderness or soreness;
- Mood swings.
Consult a doctor if the side effects are persistent. Be sure to read the package leaflet before you start using this medicine for important information about possible serious side effects that are associated with HRT use.
When not to use Femoston-Conti
Femoston-Conti is not suitable for everyone. Do not use this HRT preparation if:
- You are allergic to estradiol, dydrogesterone or any other ingredient in this medicine;
- You have a known or past history of thrombosis or liver disease;

- You have a blood disease or kidney disorder, vaginal bleeding of unknown cause or an overgrowth of the lining of the womb (endometrial hyperplasia).
Consult a doctor on the use of Femoston-Conti if you have a health problem that is not listed above. Be sure to tell the doctor what other medicines you are taking when you order. This is to avoid potential interaction and to make sure that the combination with Femoston-Conti is safe.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment used to relieve the symptoms of menopause in menopausal women. Women who are still fertile should not use Femoston-Conti if pregnant or breastfeeding, unless the doctor advises otherwise.
