What is Fluitussin?
Fluitussin is a cough medicine. The tablets contain the active ingredient noscapine, a medicine that has an antitussive (cough-suppressing) effect. Fluitussin should only be used to treat dry (tickly) coughs. Fluitussin tablets are suitable for adults and children aged six years and older.
What is Fluitussin used for?
A tickly (non-productive or dry) cough is a cough in which the lungs, upper airways or throat are irritated but no phlegm is coughed up. Fluitussin suppresses the cough reflex, which in turn reduces coughing. This allows you to get a good night’s sleep and the airways to heal. Fluitussin stops tickly coughs in less than an hour. One tablet provides approximately four hours of relief.
How to use Fluitussin
Fluitussin tablets should be swallowed whole with plenty of liquid. They can be taken with or without food. Consult a doctor if your tickly cough symptoms have not improved after two weeks.
The general recommended dose is:
- Adults and children aged 15 and above: one to two tablets, three to four times a day.
- Children aged 6 to 15: one tablet three to four times a day.
Be sure to leave at least four hours in between doses. Children under six years of age should only be given this medicine by a doctor. Read the package leaflet before use.
Fluitussin may cause side effects, although some people may not experience any. Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness or hypersensitivity. In rare cases, nausea may occur. Taking the Fluitussin tablets with food can help prevent this. For more information on possible side effects, see the package leaflet.
When not to use Fluitussin
Do not use Fluitussin if you are allergic to the active ingredient noscapine or any other ingredient in this medicine. See the package leaflet for a list of all the ingredients. The active ingredient noscapine can interact with blood-diluting medication (anticoagulants). Consult a doctor on the use of Fluitussin if you are currently taking anticoagulants.
Fluitussin should not be used by pregnant women without consulting a doctor first. This medicine is not recommended in breastfeeding mothers.
Fluitussin may cause lightheadedness or drowsiness. Stay out of traffic if you experience these side effects.
This medicine does not interact with alcohol.
