What is Fluoxetine?
Fluoxetine is a type of antidepressant known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). The active ingredient, fluoxetine, works by preventing neurotransmitters, chemical messengers between nerve cells, from being reabsorbed. A neurotransmitter deficiency is known to be associated with psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. Fluoxetine works by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters, which helps to improve moods and reduce depression.
What is Fluoxetine used for?
Fluoxetine is used to treat feelings of depression such as chronic gloominess, apathy and lack of energy. Fluoxetine may also be used in the treatment of the eating disorder bulimia nervosa, nerve pain, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and various anxiety disorders.
How to use Fluoxetine
Fluoxetine is available in capsule and liquid form (suspension). The capsules should be swallowed whole, without chewing, with plenty of liquid. The oral suspension comes with a dosage spoon for measuring the correct amount. Fluoxetine can be taken at any time of the day, with or without food. It may take between two to four weeks for the benefits of this medicine to appear, so it is very important that you keep taking it, even if it doesn’t seem to make much difference at first. If your symptoms have not improved in 4 to 12 weeks, you should contact your doctor to discuss alternative drug options.
Fluoxetine comes in 20-mg and 60-mg capsules. Each 5 ml of oral solution contains 20 mg of fluoxetine. Strength, daily dose and duration must be determined by a doctor. The usual recommended dose is:
- Adults: 20 mg to 60 mg a day, depending on the condition and severity of the symptoms.
- Children aged 8 to 18 years: 10 mg to 20 mg a day. Fluoxetine should only be prescribed by a specialist for children in this age group.
This medicine is not suitable for use in children under the age of eight. Read the package leaflet before use.
All medicines can cause side effects, although some people may not experience any. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with Fluoxetine:
- Gastrointestinal symptoms;
- Fatigue, drowsiness. Take your medicine in the evening if you experience these side effects;
- Difficulty sleeping (insomnia). Take your medicine in the morning if you experience this side effect.
Most side effects are usually only temporary and will disappear within about a week once the body adjusts to the medicine. Consult a doctor if the side effects are severe or persistent. For more information, see the package leaflet.
When not to use Fluoxetine
Fluoxetine is not suitable for everyone. Do not use this antidepressant if:
- You are allergic to fluoxetine or any other ingredient in this medicine;
- You are currently taking or have recently taken a type of medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI).
Consult your doctor if you have epilepsy or a health-related condition that is not listed above. You should also tell the doctor if you are taking any other medicines when you order. This is to avoid potential interaction and to make sure that the combination with Fluoxetine is safe.
Do not use Fluoxetine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless otherwise advised by your doctor.
Fluoxetine may cause side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness or sleepiness, especially in the initial phase of treatment. Stay out of traffic if you feel that your reaction time might be delayed.
Do not drink alcohol while taking Fluoxetine as this is likely to trigger or worsen the side effects.
