Medisana Light Therapy LSC: alleviates SAD
Daylight plays a key role in many chemical processes in our body. It regulates our biological clock and boosts feelings of alertness and vitality during the daytime. In the summer we get enough sunlight. But as the days begin to shorten, we are exposed to less and less sunshine. This can lead to physiological and psychological problems such as tiredness, gloominess, concentration loss and apathy. These problems are referred to as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also known as autumn blues or winter depression. The Medisana LSC bright light unit, also called the LSC light shower, allows you to get extra light in the autumn and winter. It lifts mood, improves symptoms of depression and restores natural energy. In recent years, light therapy has become a popular treatment with those who have SAD. The advantage of this form of therapy is that it has no side effects. In addition, light therapy can be done at home at any time of the day that is convenient.
How does the Medisana Light Therapy LSC (Medisana Light Shower LSC) work?
The Medisana Light Therapy LSC emits an intense amount of light. By way of comparison, direct sunlight will give you about 100,000 lux. On a dark or cloudy day this is 500 lux at most, while most people function at their best when exposed to 10,000 to 100,000 lux a day. Depending on the distance, the Medisana light box gives out about 5,000 to 10,000 lux. The bright light reaches the back of the eye (the retina) which sends nerve signals to parts of the brain. This influences chemical processes in the brain which affect mood. The closer to the light unit, the more lux you get and the shorter the treatment duration. The Medisana Light Shower LSC has an adjustable foot and is easy to store away. The LSC is flicker free and gives out comfortable, natural light with no stroboscope effects.
