What is Mysimba and what is it used for?
Mysimba is a new weight loss drug. It contains naltrexone and bupropion, two active ingredients that act on the brains reward system to influence eating behaviour. Mysimba lowers appetite and food cravings, which makes it easier to stick to a weight loss programme. Mysimba is only intended for people who are seriously overweight or clinically obese: people with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 27 kg/m2 with specific risk factors such as diabetes or high cholesterol, and people with a BMI of over 30 kg/m2.
What you need to know about Mysimba
If you are taking Mysimba for the first time, make sure you take account of the following:
- Do not use this weight loss medicine if you are allergic to the active ingredients or suffer from epilepsy;
- This medicine may cause dizziness. Stay out of traffic if you experience this side effect;
- Avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol while taking this medicine as this will increase the chance of serious side effects;
- Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding without consulting a doctor first;
- If you have not managed to lose weight with Mysimba after several months of using it, consult a doctor to see if its use is appropriate.
How to use Mysimba
As your body needs time to adjust to the active ingredients in Mysimba, it is important that you follow a specific treatment regimen. The package leaflet will tell you how many tablets you should take at a time. Follow this dosing schedule, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Mysimba is most effective when used with increased exercise and a reduced calorie diet. The more exercise you get and the lower your daily calorie intake, the faster you will lose weight. Consult the information brochure Experiences with Mysimba for tips on how to keep active and make healthier food choices.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, Mysimba may cause side effects. Common side effects include stomach distress, a dry mouth and headache. Most side effects are not serious and only temporary. In rare cases, side effects can signal a serious problem, such as depression. For more information, see the package leaflet.
Mysimba should be stored at room temperature and kept out of reach of children.
