What is Pravastatin?
Pravastatin is a cholesterol lowering drug. The active substance pravastatin ensures that the liver produces less cholesterol. Due to the lower cholesterol levels in the blood, the risk of heart disease decreases.
What is Pravastatin used for?
Pravastatin is used to treat a high cholesterol level in the blood. Patients who for some reason have an increased risk of developing heart disease are sometimes prescribed this preventive drug.
How do you use Pravastatin?
It is best to take Pravastatin at night. Because cholesterol is created at night, the medication is able to work optimally.
A forgotten dose can still be taken up to 16 hours later. After that time it is better to skip the missed dose.
Pravastatin is available in tablets of 10, 20 and 40 mg. Ask the doctor which strength you should use. The usual dose is one tablet per day, unless the doctor tells you otherwise.
When using Pravastatin you may experience side effects. Muscle symptoms occur rarely (unexplained muscle pain, muscle cramps or joint pain). This may indicate a serious side effect. In this case, talk with the doctor.
Immediately stop using Pravastatin if you notice any side effect that may indicate a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face and mouth, skin rash). In this case, immediately alert a doctor.
For a complete list of possible side effects, check the leaflet.
Alcohol and Pravastatin
Alcohol in combination with Pravastatin may put too much pressure on your liver. Therefore, be careful with the use of alcoholic beverages.
Pravastatin may cause dizziness in the beginning. When treatment is continued, this symptom usually disappears on its own. Participation in traffic is then no longer a problem anymore.
