Experiences with Propecia
Male pattern baldness
Propecia offers excellent results for men who are going bald. It is the first drug in history to effectively treat early stage male pattern baldness:
- On the top of the scalp;
- On the area right behind the hairline.
Propecia tablets contain the active ingredient finasteride. It has been scientifically proven that finasteride prevents hair loss and can increase hair growth in young men with early-stage pattern baldness. So it is not surprising that many men are very enthusiastic about Propecia.
Male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, is the most common form of hair loss among men. More than 40% of Dutch men above the age of 30 suffer from this type of baldness. It is assumed that it is caused by a hypersensitivity to the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This hormone causes the hair to thin and shortens the hair growth phase. The condition is hereditary. Hair loss can start at any age after puberty.
In androgenetic alopecia, a receding hairline develops and the hair at the sides becomes thinner. Gradually the hair on top of the head also begins to thin, spreading out to the rest of the scalp until almost all of the hair is gone. Some men are left with a U-shaped ring of hair around the crown. Others go completely bald.
How does Propecia work?
The active ingredient in Propecia, finasteride, works by inhibiting the action of an enzyme that is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT. In doing so, it reduces the level of DTH in the scalp. Many men have had positive experiences with Propecia: not only does frequent use delay the balding process, more than 50% of users noticed new hair growth. It has not been proven that Propecia is effective in men with a receding hairline at the temples. Propecia is not effective once you have gone completely bald.
How to use Propecia
Propecia tablets should be used daily. They can be taken with or without food. Taking more than one tablet a day does not lead to better results. You will need to keep taking this medicine daily on a continuous basis for its effects to be maintained. If treatment is stopped, the beneficial effects begin to reverse and return to baseline by 9 to 12 months.
How long does it take for Propecia to work?
Propecia starts working almost immediately, but as growth of hair is a very slow process it may take some time before you notice that you are losing less hair. Research has shown that most men experience less hair loss after three months. One third of men will notice an increase in hair growth.
According to user experiences, 90% of men with male pattern hair loss stabilised and showed no additional hair loss after using Propecia. If you see no results after a year of taking Propecia, there is probably no point in further treatment.
