What is Trazodone?
Trazodone is a tetracyclic antidepressant. It works by influencing the amount of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. Nerve cells need serotonin to send messages to each other. A shortage of serotonin can lead to psychological problems such as anxiety and chronic gloominess. Trazodone helps the brain to increase serotonin levels, which helps relieve these symptoms. Trazodone is a prescription-only medicine.
What is Trazodone used for?
Trazodone is used in the treatment of depression. A doctor might diagnose you with depression if symptoms such as gloominess or emptiness last more than two weeks. Depression is often accompanied by apathy, lack of energy, sleeping difficulties, anxiety and fatigue.
How to use Trazodone
Trazodone tablets should preferably be taken with food. The tablets should not be chewed, but swallowed whole with some liquid. Trazodone can be taken as one dose at bedtime or spread evenly throughout the day. It may take a while for the benefits of this medicine to appear. In most cases, it takes two weeks for Trazodone to reach full effect. If your symptoms have not improved after four weeks, contact a doctor to discuss alternative drug options.
Trazodone tablets are available in three strengths: 50 mg, 100 mg and 150 mg. The doctor will recommend the right strength for you depending on your symptoms. In adults, the general recommended dose is:
- 150 mg a day, in one dose or spread out over the day (e.g. three doses of 50 mg).
In most cases, the doctor will increase the starting dose until the most effective dose is reached. A different starting dose may be prescribed for elderly people. Trazodone is not suitable for children under the age of 18. Read the package leaflet before use.
Like all medicines, Trazodone can have side effects. Side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine include:
- Sleepiness, dizziness, drowsiness;
