What is Valdoxan?
Valdoxan is an antidepressant, a type of medicine that is used to treat depression. Valdoxan tablets contain the active ingredient agomelatine. Agomelatine increases noradrenaline and dopamine release in the brain. These natural chemicals are involved, amongst other things, in regulating mood. Disrupted sleeping patterns are also a common symptom of depression. Agomelatine mends disturbed circadian rhythms, which improves all phases of disrupted sleep. Valdoxan is a prescription-only medicine.
What is Valdoxan used for?
Valdoxan is used to treat depression. It is effective in the treatment of depression accompanied by sleep problems, such as difficulty falling asleep or excessive sleepiness. Valdoxan also helps alleviate other symptoms of depression such as gloominess, fatigue and lack of interest.
How to use Valdoxan
Valdoxan tablets should be swallowed whole with some liquid. They can be taken with or without food. Unless otherwise advised by the doctor, you should take your tablet one to two hours before bedtime. Valdoxan generally provides short-term relief from sleep problems. It may take a little longer for other symptoms of depression to improve. If you do not feel better after two weeks of taking Valdoxan, talk to your doctor to adjust the dose or explore alternative drug options. If Valdoxan is effective, treatment is normally continued for at least six months to prevent the symptoms from coming back.
Valdoxan is available in tablets of 25 mg. Daily dose and duration must be determined by a doctor. In adults, the usual dose is:
- One tablet a day before bedtime.
This medicine is not suitable for use in children under the age of 18. Read the package leaflet before use.
Like all medicines Valdoxan may have side effects, although not everybody gets them. The most commonly reported side effects include:

- Headache, migraine;
Most side effects usually become less within one to two weeks once the body adjusts to the medicine. Consult a doctor if the side effects persist. For more information, see the package leaflet.
