What is erectile dysfunction?
In people with erectile dysfunction, the complex process of getting an erection is disturbed. Normally, sexual stimulation causes the blood vessels in the penis to widen, allowing more blood to enter the penis, which ultimately results in the penis becoming and staying rigid and erect. Many cases of ED occur because the blood vessels in the penis do not dilate enough to allow sufficient blood flow, or the veins can't keep blood there, leading to erection problems.
Symptoms of ED
- The penis stays (partly) flaccid or the erection fails prematurely, making it difficult to have sex.
- An inability to get an erection.
Experiencing difficulty with erections from time to time does not necessarily mean you have ED. Most men occasionally fail to get or keep an erection. However, if it is a recurring problem, then it is important to take it seriously.
Effects of ED
Erectile dysfunction can have profound effects, causing feelings of shame and insecurity, which in turn can impact quality of life and even interpersonal relationships. If you are struggling with ED, know that you are not alone and that there are effective solutions available.
Causes of ED
Physical causes:
Age, an unhealthy lifestyle, smoking, medicine use, certain medical conditions, hormonal imbalance.
Psychological/emotional causes:
Stress, fatigue, depression, fear of failure or performance anxiety, feelings of insecurity, traumatic experiences.
Preventing ED
The risk for ED can increase with age, but there are things you can do to lower your risk, such as making effective lifestyle changes. A healthy lifestyle, regular exercise and avoiding stress are all key elements in keeping ED at bay.
Solutions for ED
Erectile dysfunction does not have to mark the end of an active sex life. There are various solutions and treatments for ED, ranging from lifestyle modification, exercises, sexual stimulation to medications and erectile aids. Erectile dysfunction medicines can be effective, but it's essential to consult a doctor for a personalised approach to ED treatment.
