Too much sleep
Not getting enough sleep and being tired are common complaints nowadays there are a large number of people who actually sleep too much. If you wake up feeling tired this is called hypersomnia. Perhaps you’ll recognise if you sleep for a long time, you’ll feel so tired and probably are will be unable to do anything useful. On the other hand, you’ll feel like you can run the world when you get up after your eight hours of sleep. Having too much sleep is not good for the body. Recent studies at the University of Cambridge show that adults who sleep more than eight hours per night have a 46% higher chances of having a stroke. Other studies also show that the risk of death is higher with the 20% of people who sleep more than eight hours a night. In addition, too much sleep may lead to getting a backache, headache and there is a greater risk of diabetes. It can also cause you to put on weight, become depressed and get the cardiovascular disease or Alzheimer’s. People who suffer from anxiety and depression often have sleeping habits. Research led by Heide Klumpp, assistant professor of psychiatry at U.I.C. indicates ” sleep might play an important role in the ability to regulate negative emotions in people who suffer from anxiety or depression.”
How much sleep do you need?
Sleep is extremely important for good health. However, this does not mean that sleeping longer is healthier. The quality of sleep you get is much more important for your body. So how much sleep you need to function properly depends on several factors. It differs per person but it is on average between 6 and 9 hours a night. One person gets by with only 6 hours. While others need more than 8 hours of sleep. So-called long sleepers sometimes need 10 to 12 hours sleep per night and are able to function fully.

Causes of sleeping too much
Sleeping too much can be caused by alcohol use or drug usage. It means that you do not reach having a deep sleep phase. Falling asleep is often not the problem, but you do not sleep through the night. Sleep apnea also occurs regularly and causes you to wake up tired in the morning. People with sleep apnea regularly stop breathing during their sleep. This causes an oxygen deficiency. You usually do not notice yourself, but this causes the very poor quality of sleep and you do not wake up well rested in the morning. Stress can also cause sleep problems, which does not help your health.
Understanding your sleeping pattern
Nowadays, there are several smartphone apps available to help you understand your sleep patterns. Sometimes you sleep more than you think. With such apps, you can check if your body is positioned correctly. There are sleep apps available for iOS and Android. They also record how much you move during your sleep. There are several factors that determine the quality of your sleep, the apps are not very accurate. However, they give a good indication. The most famous sleep app is Sleep Cycle for iOS.
What can you do if you get to sleep too much?
The body benefits most by having a structured routine. If you can try to go to bed every night at the same time. Before sleeping you could read for a while to help you wind down. If you also wake up at the same time as much as possible. Of course, you can sleep in on the weekend, but do not stay in bed for too long. Creating a comfortable sleeping environment will also help. It helps to have a dark, well-ventilated and tidy bedroom, a comfortable mattress and a warm duvet. It is also wise not to eat too much or drink caffeine before going to sleep. Hot milk or banana can help to promote sleep as it contains tryptophan therein contained.
If hypersomnia occurs, it is important that this is traced and treated. This will also help to reduce the sleep problems. People who have hypersomnia can fall asleep at any moment; it can be dangerous as you can start to sleep behind the wheel or while working.It is important to be aware of your sleep pattern for your overall health.
