No matter how successful we are at diet and weight loss, one day we hit a wall and begin to have difficulty losing weight. Sometimes curbing your intake and getting regular exercise does not do it and your body weight remains the same. Why you can’t manage to lose weight may be down to any number of reasons. But finding out why will bring you closer to your weight loss goals. There are three main reasons people have a hard time losing weight. This article discusses these three reasons and, of course, gives tips on how to shed those pounds successfully.
Are you eating the right food?
A big problem today is that many foods that we eat have added sugar or rapidly digestible carbohydrates. Take, for instance, ready-made meals, white bread, white rice and pasta, mashed potatoes, breakfast cereals, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages and carton-packed fruit juice. These types of foods cause insulin spikes in our blood, which cause an enzyme that breaks down fat to be blocked. As a result, weight loss stalls or stops.
Tip 1: beware of ‘fast carbohydrates’
Take a critical look at your diet and read the labels on the products that you buy. Try to replace fast carbohydrates with slow-carb alternatives (e.g. wholegrain bread, oatmeal, silverskin rice and jacket potatoes).
Tip 2: pack your diet with vegetables, fruit and healthy fats
Fresh vegetables and fruit should play a key role in your diet because they are low calorie and loaded with nutrients. Add fibre to your diet to improve bowel function. And last but not least, replace foods with saturated fat (e.g. sausage, fat meat, full-fat cheese, full-fat dairy products and stick margarine) with foods that contain healthy fats (e.g. fish, eggs, seeds and nuts, natural oils). You are now well on your way to lose weight healthily.
Are you eating enough?
Paradoxical as it sounds, not eating enough can sabotage your weight loss efforts. When you eat too little, your metabolism slows down and your body goes into ‘survival mode’ to stop calorie loss. And worse: your body will take every opportunity to store fat.
Tip 3: eat frequently
A regular eating pattern is good. Eating five times a day will prevent you from feeling hungry and your metabolism from slowing down. Of course, make sure you eat smaller meals that are healthy and low in calories.
Are you exercising the right way?
You could be doing too much or too much of the same thing. Your body becoming accustomed to a certain level of exercise intensity can also be a reason for not losing weight.
Tip 4: rest periods & variation
You will be more successful at losing weight through exercise when you rest in between exercises and surprise your muscles with new exercise patterns at set times.
