What is it used for?

Cholesterol is one of the body’s fats (lipids). To some extent, the cholesterol level in blood depends on what you eat, but it is mainly dependent on how the body makes cholesterol in the liver. There are two sorts of cholesterol: a ‘bad’ sort called low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and a ‘good’ sort called high-density lipoprotein (HDL). The latter has a useful effect in reducing cholesterol and taking it back to the liver. If you have too much LDL in your blood, it can stick to the walls of your arteries and lead to hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis). Arteriosclerosis occurs when your arteries become clogged and lose their elasticity, and is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease. High cholesterol levels can be caused by many factors, including unhealthy eating habits, smoking and obesity. Hereditary factors can also affect cholesterol levels. Checking your cholesterol can provide you with information on your likelihood of heart and vascular disease. With the Test-Point Cholesterol Plus Test you can check your cholesterol quickly and easily in the comfort of your home, saving you a trip to the doctor’s office.

How to use the Test-Point Cholesterol Plus Test

The Test-Point Cholesterol Plus Test is very easy to use. The kit contains two tests: a test to measure your total cholesterol level (TCL) and a test to measure your HDL cholesterol level. Make sure you read through all the steps in the package leaflet: the tests are only reliable if performed properly. This is how the test is used:

  • Wash your hand and prick the tip of your middle finger or ring finger with the lancet;
  • Squeeze your finger until it bleeds and drop a droplet of blood into the round blood well;
  • Wait at least three but no more than four minutes;
  • Activate the tester by pulling the plastic tab firmly;
  • After 12 minutes you can read the test result by matching the numbers on the cholesterol result chart.

Note: The above instructions are only a general guideline. For more detailed instructions, consult the package leaflet and follow the steps carefully. If the test result shows that your cholesterol level is high, contact your doctor for further evaluation. Cholesterol-reducing medication may also be required.

When not to use the test

The Test-Point Cholesterol Plus Test should not be used if:

  • You are a haemophilia patient or use blood thinners;
  • You are under the age of 18 years.

Medicine use or a recent pregnancy are factors that may influence the test result. For more information, see the package leaflet.
