A doctor will review your order and write you a prescription, if appropriate. This prescription is then forwarded to a pharmacy. The pharmacy will have your medicine delivered to you within one to three working days. Read more about this process here.
What is Co-trimoxazole?
Co-trimoxazole is an antibiotic or a bactericidal drug. This medication is prescribed for various types of bacterial infections. You can order Co-trimoxazole online at the registered EU pharmacies that we have access to.
What is the medicine used for?
Doctors prescribe Co-trimoxazole in bacterial infections, including:
- Urinary tract infections;
- Prostate inflammation;
- Certain sexually transmitted diseases (such as gonorrhoea);
- Respiratory infections (pneumonia, middle ear infection).
This medicine consists of the two active substances trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. These bactericidal medicines reinforce each other's effect. Co-trimoxazole usually works quickly; within a few days, you will notice that the symptoms of inflammation (such as fever and pain) decrease.
How should you take Co-trimoxazole?
Swallow the tablets whole with sufficient liquid. If you have difficulty swallowing the tablet, you can also dissolve it into a glass of water first. Stir the liquid well and drink it immediately. Take Co-trimoxazole preferably during or after a meal to prevent gastrointestinal complaints. A doctor will tell you how long you should continue to use this medication. Always complete the treatment, even if you have no symptoms. Prematurely stopping antibiotics can cause the infection to come back.
At the registered EU pharmacies that we have access to, you can buy Co-trimoxazole online in various strengths. A doctor knows which strength is best for your symptoms. The dosage guidelines are as follows:
Adults and children over 12 years: 480 mg twice a day (every 12 hours).
For children younger than 12 years of age, a different dosage advice applies, based on their body weight. A doctor will advise you on the correct dosage for your child. For young children, a doctor can also prescribe a suspension (drink) that is easier to take. Read the instructions before use.
Although Co-trimoxazole is generally well-tolerated, you may experience side effects during treatment such as:
- Nausea and vomiting;
- Skin rash and/or itching;
- Elevated blood levels;
- Fungal infections;
- Inflammation of the colon or liver.
In the package leaflet, you will find a complete overview of the possible side effects. Contact us if you experience any side effects, even if it concerns symptoms that are not mentioned in the package leaflet.
When should you not use this medicine?
Co-trimoxazole is not suitable for everyone. Do not use this medication if you:
Are hypersensitive to trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole or any of the excipients in the medicine;
Suffers from certain blood disorders (see leaflet), severely reduced kidney function or severe damage to the liver cells;
Use the drug dofetilide.
There are a number of situations where you should be careful when taking Co-trimoxazole, for example, if you are taking certain medicines or if you suffer from a certain condition. Consult a doctor if this applies to you. You will find an overview of these warnings in the package leaflet.
Co-trimoxazole should only be used in consultation with a doctor during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Co-trimoxazole has no influence on the ability to drive and does not interact with alcohol.
