Enalapril Maleate is a medication often sold under the brand name Vasotec. This substance is a medication used to treat hypertension, and sometimes heart failure. It is part of a group of drugs called ACE Inhibitors.

What is Enalapril Maleate?

Enalapril Maleate is a prescription medication that is available under the brand-name Vasotec. Often, your doctor will recommend purchasing the generic version of this medication if you need an option that costs less than the brand version. In some cases, generic drugs are also available in different strengths than the brand version of the drug. Enalapril Maleate belongs to a group of medications known as Angiotensin Converting Enzyme or "ACE" inhibitors. Enalapril Maleate causes the blood vessels in your body to widen and relax, can reduce your blood pressure and protect against issues like heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and heart failure.

When is Enalapril Maleate used?

Enalapril Maleate is usually prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure, otherwise known as hypertension. Reducing high blood pressure is crucial, as although this condition doesn't always cause symptoms, it can lead to serious issues like kidney problems, heart attacks, heart failure and strokes. In some cases, this medication can reduce high blood pressure by relaxing and dilating the blood vessels in the body, which helps blood to pump freely. Enalapril Maleate can also be used in certain situations to treat people who have suffered from heart failure in the past. If you have had heart failure, and now have damage in your cardiac muscle, then you may need to ensure that you can pump blood more easily to avoid fatal repercussions. Enalapril Maleate can significantly reduce the death rate in systolic heart failure patients, usually when used with diuretics and digitalis.

In less common situations, Enalapril Maleate might be given by your doctor to treat kidney disease that is related to issues like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

How do you use Enalapril Maleate?

Enalapril Maleate works best when it is taken regularly. To make sure that you take the same dose every day, your doctor will often recommend setting an alarm to take your drug at the same time each day. This medication can be taken by mouth with or without food, and it is often easier to take with a glass of water. There are multiple forms of Enalapril Maleate available, including tablets and an oral suspension liquid. A doctor will base your dose on your medical condition and your previous responses to other hypertension treatments if this is not the first medication you have used for high blood pressure. If you are using the oral suspension version of this medication, make sure that you shake the container before using it. Measure your medication carefully using a special device. Do not use a household spoon or cup to measure this medication. If you are taking the tablet version of Enalapril Maleate, simply take the correct dosage at the same time every day. Make sure that you continue to take this medication even if you feel better after a few weeks. You must continue to use Enalapril Maleate until your doctor tells you otherwise, as many people with high blood pressure will not feel unwell.

What Dosages are available?

It often takes a few weeks for the full benefits of Enalapril Maleate to take effect., During this time, your doctor will monitor you carefully to make sure that you're on the right dose. Your doctor will choose your dose according to your weight and your condition. In the tablet form, Enalapril Maleate comes in 2.5, 5 and 10 mg options.

Usually, the dose for hypertension is 5mg once per day. However, your doctor can increase this amount to up to 40mg a day depending on your response to the treatment. Additionally, a diuretic may be added to your dose to help you get the full benefits of the medication. If you are using this drug for congestive heart failure, then you will often use Enalapril Maleate with diuretics and digitalis. The dose for congestive heart failure begins at 2.5mg, with doses that increase to a maximum of 40mg. If you're using Enalapril Maleate for left ventricular dysfunction, the typical dose is usually 2.5 mg twice a day, up to a maximum of 20mg per day.
