What is FemSeven Sequi?
FemSeven Sequi patches are a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) preparation for menopausal women. The patches contain two active ingredients: estradiol (an oestrogen hormone) and levonorgestrel (a progestogen hormone). The hormones are released into the bloodstream through the skin. This helps relieve menopausal symptoms. FemSeven Sequi patches are only available on prescription.
What is FemSeven Sequi used for?
During menopause, which usually comes around the age of 45, women's ovaries produce less and less oestrogen, and oestrogen levels decline as a result. This can cause different types of symptoms, including:
- Hot flushes;
- Mood swings;
- Vaginal dryness;
- Sleeping difficulties;
- Night sweats;
- Depression, irritability.
HRT replaces the oestrogen that the body is no longer producing. This helps reduce menopausal symptoms. FemSeven Sequi patches are especially suitable for women with an intact womb who are still having (irregular) periods.
How to use FemSeven Sequi
FemSeven Sequi consists of two types of patches. The phase one patches contain estradiol and are used during the first two weeks of every monthly cycle. The phase two patches contain estradiol and levonorgestrel and are used for the last two weeks of every monthly cycle. The patches are worn continuously. A withdrawal bleed usually occurs each month towards the end of the phase two patches. Follow the application instructions in the package leaflet carefully.
Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the recommended dose in adult women is:
- one fresh patch, once a week.
Read the package leaflet before use.
FemSeven Sequi patches may cause side effects, including:
- Skin irritation at patch application site;
- Leg cramps;
- Fluid retention;
- Breakthrough bleeding or vaginal discharge;
- Breast tenderness or soreness.
Most side effects will disappear with continued use. If this is not the case, consult a doctor. Read the package leaflet for more information on side effects. It is important to be aware that all women using HRT have a slightly increased risk of serious side effects such as cancer and thrombosis compared with women who don't use HRT. See the package leaflet for further information.
When not to use FemSeven Sequi
FemSeven Sequi patches are not suitable for everyone. Do not use this HRT preparation if:
- You are allergic to estradiol, levonorgestrel or any other of its ingredients;
- You have active breast cancer or a history of breast cancer or other oestrogen-related cancer;
- You have vaginal bleeding of unknown cause or an overgrowth of the lining of the womb (endometrial hyperplasia);
- You have or have had thrombosis or a blood or liver disease.
Consult a doctor before using FemSeven Sequi patches if you have a health condition that is not listed above or are taking medication.
Women who are still capable of becoming pregnant should not use FemSeven Sequi patches if pregnant or breastfeeding. Warning: FemSeven Sequi patches do not protect against pregnancy! If necessary you should use a contraceptive of some kind to avoid getting pregnant. FemSeven Sequi patches do not interact with alcohol or affect your ability to drive safely.
