What is Flexi-T?
Flexi-T is a small, flexible non-hormonal contraceptive intrauterine device containing copper, which prevents fertilisation by reducing sperm motility. Flexi-T also prevents any fertilised eggs from embedding in the lining of the womb. Flexi-T was specifically designed to fit the natural shape and dimensions of the uterus for optimal comfort. As it does not contain hormones it permits the natural menstrual cycle to occur.
What is Flexi-T used for?
Flexi-T is a contraceptive intrauterine device that was developed to minimise the side effects associated with the existing, larger rigid models. Flexi-T can prevent pregnancy in both a contraceptive and 'morning after' capacity. Flexi-T is a highly effective contraceptive option as nothing can interfere with its efficacy (for example, it cannot be forgotten like a hormone pill and it is not affected by any other medications taken). Furthermore, Flexi-T is also suitable for women who cannot take hormone-based contraception (for instance those with thrombosis, diabetes, migraines, weight gain, mood swings or heavy smokers).
The Flexi-T 300 model is specifically designed for the smaller uteri of women who have not yet had children (other models are available for women who have had children).
How to use Flexi-T?
Flexi-T is inserted in the uterine cavity of women of reproductive age. Fitting is recommended during menstruation as the neck of the womb is wider, allowing for easier insertion. A check-up is recommended after the first menstrual cycle has occurred after insertion, followed by annual check-ups to make sure the Flexi-T remains in the correct position.
Flexi-T is T-shaped, with a 28 mm shaft and a 23 mm transverse arm width, and contains minimum 300 mm2 of copper coiled around the shaft. Flexi-T should only be inserted by a GP or gynaecologist and should last for 5 years. After 5 years, a new Flexi-T can be fitted.
Very few side effects are reported for Flexi-T; some women may experience mild pain when it is first fitted. See the package leaflet for more information on side effects.
Who should not use Flexi-T?
Flexi-T is not suitable for women with womb abnormalities. Flexi-T should not be used in women who have already had children; a slightly larger model is available for these women.
Pregnancy / driving ability
Flexi-T should not be used in women who are pregnant (however, it is suitable for use after women have given birth, while breast-feeding). Once Flexi-T is removed, fertility immediately returns. Flexi-T does not affect driving ability.
