A hangover, is there really a cure that works?

But what’s the best way of dealing with a hangover? A hearty breakfast, a drink or even a sauna? Surprisingly, no! Read our following handy tips that will help you survive the trauma of a hangover – and, no, the ‘hair of the dog’ is not among them!
Symptoms of a hangover?
A good hangover can be recognised by, among other things, the following symptoms:
• A splitting headache;
• Nausea and vomiting;
• Stomach ache;
• Dry mouth.
Remarkably, the main cause of these symptoms is a lack of fluid, even though you have drunk so much wine/beer/spirits. Alcohol inhibits the production of the antidiuretic hormone, causing you to urinate more so that your body becomes slightly dehydrated. In addition, spirits influence the immune system, which contributes to the feeling of illness. The good news: a hangover disappears spontaneously in most cases. The bad news: this can take up to 8 to 24 hours. However, following our hangover tips will help to limit the damage.
How to cure a hangover?
Sleeping is the best and easiest way to get rid of your hangover. Close your eyes and sleep through it until the worst of misery is over. If sleeping is not an option, for example, because you have to go to work in an hour, you need some extra help. There are many hangover tips in the form of traditional home remedies that promise a quick fix. Unfortunately, most of them have little effect. What does help:
• Drinking a lot of water. To counteract the drying out effect of alcohol, it is important to quickly replenish the lack of moisture so start by drinking a few glasses of water.
• Taking a vitamin pill. Research has shown that a vitamin B complex can help to reduce symptoms such as headaches and irritability.
• Drinking something sweet, such as a glass of orange juice or decaffeinated soft drinks. This gives your blood sugar a boost, making you less shaky and lethargic.
• If you have an upset stomach, trying a cup of ginger or peppermint tea. This helps combat nausea.
• Being careful with coffee as caffeine has a dehydrating effect, just like alcohol, which can lead to a worsening of your symptoms. If you really need a coffee, try half a cup and see how it goes.
Medications that are good for a hangover

Gastric acid inhibitors or binders can alleviate persistent stomach complaints. If you mainly suffer from headaches or muscle pain, you can take a painkiller. Although paracetamol is always the first choice when it comes to pain control, anti-inflammatory painkillers (aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac) are also very helpful. Do not swallow them on an empty stomach, but try and eat a dry biscuit or a sandwich first. This helps to prevent gastrointestinal symptoms.
