Healthy ways to overcome your phobia of the fear of flying

Having a fear of flying can seem like a merely inconvenient phobia, but if you need to travel for work or to see family, it can be incredibly disruptive to your day to day life. Having a fear of flying can be something that is a separate issue, or linked to an existing anxiety disorder. Luckily, there are many different ways people can now overcome this fear.

Finding the cause

Finding the cause of the phobia is the best way to get a good starting point for treatment. There could be a number of different reasons people are scared of flying, even if the person with the fear cannot identify them. Some of the best ways to find the cause of your fear of flying can include:

Going to therapy

Going to therapy may help you identify what it is that scares you about flying. Once you have identified this, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy should be able to help you start building the foundations of curing the phobia.

Looking back at experiences

If you have had a terrible experience flying, then no doubt this will have affected your ability to fly without panicking. Once you have identified this, you can start to look at ways to overcome the specific incident that caused you the fear.

Linking to existing phobias

You may find that your fear of flying links to an existing phobia, like claustrophobia or fear of heights. To treat your flying phobia, you will first need to tackle these issues.

Treating the fear

There are many different things you can do to actually treat your fear. A lot of people chose to take medication, or have a few drinks, but if you are not aware of your surroundings you will never be able to constructively work on your fear.

Fear of flying courses

All of the big airlines now offer fear of flying courses, which end with a short flight. You will get to speak to staff and ground through and also a therapist, and they usually last a day. You can book them through the airline themselves, and a quick search engine search will point you in the right direction.

Try some meditation

There are a number of different exercises you can do to calm your mind through meditation when you have to fly. You can either download these via app or as an mp3 file. There is also a very good book available called ‘Soar’ by Tom Bunn, which couples simple techniques with lots of knowledge about the inner workings of aeroplanes which can help to put your mind at rest.
