What is Hydrogen Peroxide?
Hydrogen Peroxide is a well-known disinfectant. It kills many types of bacteria in the mouth and can be used to prevent mouth infections and tooth decay. In diluted form, hydrogen peroxide is used as a mouthwash. The solution will fizz in your mouth, which makes it effective for cleaning the areas that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush.
What is Hydrogen Peroxide used for?
Hydrogen Peroxide can be used to treat mouth infections such as mouth ulcers or inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). Dentists recommend disinfecting the mouth with hydrogen peroxide after dental surgery, particularly in instances where toothbrushing is a problem. Brushing the teeth with hydrogen peroxide promotes wound healing and prevents mouth infections and tooth decay (cavities).
How to use Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen Peroxide should not be taken in concentrated form and needs to be diluted for medicinal use. Dilute with a similar amount of lukewarm water before use. Diluted hydrogen peroxide should be stored in a fridge. Do not use for more than seven days in a row without consulting a doctor. Rinse your mouth with the Hydrogen Peroxide solution after toothbrushing or instead of toothbrushing. Do not swallow.
Unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor or dentist, the usual dose is:
- mix 15 ml of Hydrogen Peroxide concentrate with 15 ml of water and swish in your mouth for one to two minutes, four times a day.
Read the package leaflet before use.
Hydrogen Peroxide may cause side effects, including:
- Unpleasant taste in the mouth;
- Blisters on the tongue (only if used long term).
For more information on side effects, see the package leaflet. Warning: Hydrogen Peroxide has a bleaching effect on hair and fabric, so be careful with linen and clothing.
When not to use Hydrogen Peroxide
Do not use if you are allergic to Hydrogen Peroxide or any other ingredient in it. Hydrogen Peroxide mouthwash is not recommended for small children due to the risk of swallowing.
Hydrogen Peroxide is safe for use during pregnancy and does not interact with alcohol or affect your ability to drive safely.
