Kamillosan is a medication that comes in a range of different forms, including ointments, creams, and sprays. This medication is herbal in nature and comes with a mild disinfectant as its active ingredient. When used correctly, the substance can be helpful at encouraging the skin to heal naturally, while strengthening the defenses of the tissues throughout the body.  

What is Kamillosan? 

Kamillosan is a unique herbal medication that is often available over the counter in locations around the EU. In some cases, it may also be prescribed by a consultant or a professional. This medication is an ointment, cream, spray or solution that is designed to help the skin heal after an injury or infection. The medication uses a chamomile extract from a specific plant, and lanolin to soothe the skin. Although it is not fully clear how this medication works, it has been used for many conditions over the years. Chamomile and similar substances are regularly used for the treatment of skin conditions and other common problems.  

Kamillosan contains a mixture of ingredients, including emulsifying wax, beeswax, and lanolin within the cream or ointment. However, the ingredients differ slightly depending on how you are taking this medication. The spray, for instance, is designed to help strengthen the tissues within the mouth while soothing pain around the airways and throat. The cream and ointment, on the other hand, can stop skin from evaporating from the skin’s surface, and improve your chances of quicker healing.  

Kamillosan’s most important ingredient is chamomile, which has been used for centuries because of its soothing properties. The substance is an herbal remedy that can support everything from calming for people who have stress or anxiety issues, to soothing chapped hands or even nappy rash. Kamillosan can also be useful for other conditions.  

When is Kamillosan used? 

The purpose of Kamillosan is linked to the kind of medication that you will receive from your doctor or consultant. For instance, if you are given the cream or ointment version of this medication, then it will usually be intended to treat a skin condition. Common skin conditions treated by Kamillosan include sensitive and dry skin, or nappy rash. Kamillosan can also help with chapped or broken skin.  

The mouth spray version of Kamillosan is ideal for soothing sore throats and generally discomfort in the mouth. It can reduce the issues of bad breath and prevent against common gum problems. Additionally, Kamillosan may be used to boost the healing abilities of ulcers.  

Kamillosan in its solution form is given in drops to be added to water, gargled, or even given within a steam bath. You can also use Kamillosan to make a form of chamomile tea. This medication is helpful for those who need help relaxing. It is ideal when you suffer from gut discomfort, stomach pain, and soothing relief for sore throats.  

Kamillosan is also sometimes available in a form of nasal spray, referred to as Kamillosan Ocean. If you take the nasal spray version of this medication, then it should help to lubricate, cleanse and moisten the nasal passages in your nose.  

Your doctor may prescribe any of these substances for reasons that are not mentioned here, based on a specific consultation with you about your current condition.  

How do you use Kamillosan? 

Before taking any new medication, including Kamillosan, it is important to read through the patient leaflet provided with the substance. You can also speak to your consultant about any questions that you may have related to this medication. Kamillosan comes in a range of different forms, and the way that you use it will depend on how you get your medication.  

If you are using the cream or ointment version of Kamillosan, then make sure that both your hands and the area that you want to treat are clean and dry before you begin. Apply a small amount of the cream or ointment to your fingers and rub a thin layer over the area to be treated. Allow the substance to soak in before you apply any other moisturizers or cosmetics.  

If you are using Kamillosan as the mouth spray version, you will need to make sure that your mouth and throat is clear. Shake the bottle before using and spray into the mouth or to the back of the throat. You can apply this medication after meals, up to three times per day. Make sure that you do not use more of the medication than is prescribed to you.  

If you are using the drops of Kamillosan for gargling or rinsing your mouth, start by adding a single table spoon of the substance to about half a glass of water. Some people prefer to use warm water. You can hold this substance in your mouth for a period of one to two minutes before swallowing it. IF you are using the Kamillosan drops in a bath or steam bath, mix around one table spoon of Kamillosan with at least a litre of hot water.  

If you are using the chamomile tea version of Kamillosan, add a single teaspoon to a cup of boiling water. Make sure that you clear out your nose by blowing it before you use the nasal spray version of this medication. Once your nose is clear, place the applicator into your nostril, and hold the other nostril closed, then administer two sprays of the medication into your nostrils, one at a time.  

What dosages are there? 

Kamillosan comes in a range of different formats, and dosages, depending on the kind of condition that you need to treat. It is important to follow the instructions provided by your consultant carefully when it comes to figuring out how much of this medication you should use, and how long you should be using it for.  

Remember, when using any kind of herbal medication, it is rarely a good idea to use more than the intended amount for your treatment. Although it’s unlikely that your condition will get better any faster when you use more of Kamillosan than necessary, your risk of suffering from side effects goes up. Additionally, you will have a greater chance of more severe side effects the more of a specific medicine that you use.  

If you do not see the results that you need from using Kamillosan for any reason, then it is best to speak to a doctor, as you may need a different kind of treatment.  

What are the side effects of Kamillosan? 

As a herbal remedy for many different conditions, there are not many severe side effects associated with Kamillosan. However, it is important to note that different people respond to all medications in different ways. There is a chance that you may have a negative reaction to using Kamillosan, which is why it is a good idea to read through the medication leaflet and listen to your consultant’s advice carefully. Ensure that you answer any consultation questions truthfully.  

The most common side effects associated with Kamillosan may go away after you begin using them for a longer period of time. Issues like skin irritation may be common when you first apply a new substance to your skin. However, if you notice any irritation or rashes that don’t go away or make your condition worse, then you should stop taking this medication.  

Although a severe allergic reaction to Kamillosan is rare, it is possible that you could have a serious negative reaction to this medication. If that happens, you will need to seek emergency medical attention as soon as possible. Speak to a doctor if you notice swelling in the area where you have applied the cream or ointment. Seek help if you notice trouble breathing, or swelling around the lips, tongue, or throat.  

When shouldn't you use Kamillosan? 

Kamillosan can be an appropriate natural treatment for a lot of conditions. It is very well tolerated and comes with very few dangerous side effects. However, it is not the right treatment for everyone. You should not take this medication if you know that you are sensitive or allergic to any of the ingredients within the substance. Make sure that you check the full ingredient list before using this medication. If you have any allergies, tell your consultant about them before you begin using Kamillosan.  

If you think that you might have had an allergic reaction to Kamillosan, then stop using the medication immediately, and inform your pharmacist or doctor. You should be able to continue to use this medication quite safely if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. However, if you are concerned, ask your consultant or speak to a doctor.  

Does Kamillosan interact with any other medications? 

Because Kamillosan smooths and softens your skin, it is possible that it will increase the rate at which other medicines are absorbed into the skin. Make sure that you are cautious when you are using corticosteroid creams and other substances. Additionally, remember that applying moisturizers and other substances to your skin after using Kamillosan can dilute the medication. You will need to make sure that you give this substance and any other topical ointments or creams that you are using plenty of time to soak into the skin before you use anything else.  

Ask your consultant whether you can safely use cosmetics with this medication.
