Lyme - Tick Bite Test
What is the Lyme - Tick Bite Test?
The Lyme - Tick Bite Test by Easy Home can be used to determine if you have been infected by a type of bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi. Borrelia burgdorferi is spread by the bite of an infected tick and can lead to Lyme disease. The Easy Home Lyme - Tick Bite test checks for IgM antibodies in the blood. The body makes these antibodies in response to Borrelia infection. The result of the test can be read on the test cassette after 10 minutes.
What is this test used for?
A tick bite can cause Lyme disease. Lyme disease affects the nervous system and can eventually lead to serious and many different symptoms ranging from eye problems, neurological problems and skin problems to fatigue and chronic arthritis. A tick bite looks like a flat, red ring that develops and expands around the bite. Not everyone will develop this characteristic rash, and the symptoms may be non-specific and flu-like at first. When caught early, Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics. However, tick bites may go unnoticed, which gives the infection the chance to spread. The Easy Home Lyme - Tick Bite Test allows you to check if you have a Borrelia burgdorferi infection.
How to use the test
The Easy Home Lyme - Tick Bite Test should be used at least two to four weeks after a tick bite, or as soon as you see a red ring or rash around the bite. If performed earlier, the blood levels of antibodies produced in response to Borrelia burgdorferi will not be sufficiently elevated for detection. Read the package leaflet thoroughly before performing the test. This is how the test is done:
- Wash and dry your hands.
- Prick your fingertip with the lancet provided and suck up a droplet of blood with the pipette according to the instructions in the package leaflet.
- Deposit the collected blood into the sample well and add four to five drops of the test liquid;
- Wait 10 minutes before reading the results.
Result of the Easy Home Lyme - Tick Bite Test
Your test result will appear in the test window on the test cassette. If a coloured line appears below the letters T (Test Result) and C (Control) you have tested positive for Borrelia. Contact a doctor as soon as possible for further examination and treatment to prevent the infection from spreading.
If a line appears only below the C, then the test has not detected a raised level of IgM. If your symptoms persist, contact your doctor to find out what is causing them.
If no lines appear under either letter, or a line appears under the T but not under the C, then the test is invalid. In this case, you should repeat the test.
The Easy Home Lyme - Tick Bite Test has no side effects.
When not to use the test
The Easy Home Lyme - Tick Bite Test is not suitable for use in haemophilia patients and people using blood thinners. Do not use the test if the expiration date on the box has passed.
