What is Perinal?

Perinal contains two active ingredients, hydrocortisone and lidocaine. Hydrocortisone is a type of medicine called a corticosteroid and is used for reducing inflammation. When applied, hydrocortisone acts locally to reduce symptoms such as swelling and redness of the skin. Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic. These two ingredients combined work to relieve anal itching, pain and irritation caused by haemorrhoids or other anal conditions.

What is it used for?

Perinal is used to treat haemorrhoids and other skin irritations in the anal area, such as anal fissures or tears. Haemorrhoids are a common problem and can be quite painful. They are often caused by straining on the toilet due to constipation. Other causes include pregnancy and childbirth. The most frequently reported symptoms are itching and pain in or around the anal region and, in some cases, bright red blood in stool. Perinal's anti-inflammatory and pain-killing effect reduces these symptoms and supports the healing process.

How to use Perinal

Perinal spray should be sprayed over the anal area. It does not matter if the spray is tilted or held upside down. See package leaflet for more information on how to use Perinal spray. Perinal is for external use on the anal area only. Avoid contact with the eyes, nose and mouth. Wash your hands after using the spray and replace the top after use.

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose is:

  • Spray once over the affected area one to three times daily.

Do not use Perinal for longer than a week. If the symptoms persist after this time consult the doctor. Perinal spray is not suitable for children under the age of 14.

Side effects

Perinal spray may cause side effects. The most commonly reported side effects include:

  • Tingling sensation after application. This side effect generally disappears quickly
  • Allergic skin reactions due to sensitivity to hydrocortisone, lidocaine or another ingredient.

See package leaflet for more side effects, warnings and contraindications.

Pregnancy/alcohol/driving ability

Perinal should only be used with the doctor's approval if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Perinal does not affect your reaction time. This means you can participate in traffic without any risk while taking it. There are also no food and alcohol restrictions with Perinal.
