What is Adalat used for?

Adalat medication is prescribed for Raynaud's phenomenon, a condition in which blood circulation in the toes and/or fingers suddenly decreases considerably. The fingers or toes feel cold or numb and their coloration can vary between white, blue or purple. As soon as the blood flow increases again, a tingling, swelling or pain may arise. An attack can last minutes to hours. Adalat increases the blood flow in the toes and fingers, allowing a decrease of the symptoms. Adalat is (at higher dosage) also prescribed for high blood pressure and certain heart conditions, such as chronic chest pain (angina).

How to use Adalat

Adalat comes in tablet form. Take the Adalat tab with or without food, swallowing it whole with some liquid. The efficiency of Adalat can be influenced by grapefruit (juice). This increases the chance of side effects. Do not eat or drink grapefruit (juice) while being treated with Adalat medication.

What are the dosages?

The partner pharmacies offer Adalat online in various strengths. A doctor will determine which dosage to use. Unless a doctor prescribes otherwise, the usual starting dose for Raynaud's phenomenon is as follows:

Adults: one capsule of 5mg or 10mg three times a day (every eight hours).

For the treatment of other diseases, your doctor may recommend a different dosage. This medication is not suitable for children under 18 years. Read the instructions before use.

What are the side effects?

Adalat is usually well tolerated but can sometimes cause side effects. These may include:

  • Headache;
  • Dizziness;
  • Fluid build-up;
  • Flushing;
  • Constipation.

If you suffer a lot from side effects or if you experience some not listed in this leaflet, please contact a doctor.

When is it best not to use this medication?

Adalat is not a suitable medicine for everyone. For example, do not use this medication if you:

  • Are oversensitive to nifedipine or any of the excipients (other ingredients) used;
  • Use Rifampicin (a medication for infections);
  • Recently had a heart attack.

Are you taking other medicines or do you suffer from any other health problems? A doctor can advise you about the use of Adalat medicine. In the leaflet in the packet you will find a full list of contraindications, interactions and other warnings.

Pregnancy/driving/alcohol

Use Adalat only in consultation with a doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. The side effects of Adalat can affect your ability to react. Do not drive if you experience symptoms such as dizziness or poor visibility. Like alcohol, Adalat dilates the blood vessels. Therefore you may experience side effects such as dizziness. Moderate or stop your intake of alcohol when using Adalat medication.
