What is Candesartan cilexetil?

Candesartan cilexetil is termed an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. It is a substance that works on blood vessels to relax and thus dilate them, bringing down blood pressure. It also ensures that the heart can pump blood through the body more easily.

When is it used?

Candesartan tablets are used to treat hypertension (elevated blood pressure). In addition, it can also be prescribed for adult patients who suffer from heart failure due to a weakened heart muscle.

How to use this medication

Always follow the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist when you use Candesartan cilexetil. Candesartan tablets can be taken with or without food, but always with water. For treatment of high blood pressure, the usual dose is 8 mg of Candesartan. Depending on your needs, your doctor can prescribe a lower (4 mg) or a higher dose (16 or 32 mg). Often a very low dosage of Candesartan is prescribed to patients with liver or kidney problems or an excessive loss of fluids. A higher dosage is applied when the effect on the blood pressure is not sufficient enough, as well as in some groups of patients who may show a decreased response to the drug. When treating heart failure, the starting dosage of Candesartan tablets is usually 4 mg. This dosage can be increased up to 32 g per day by your physician, with the dosage doubled every two weeks. To treat heart failure, other drugs may be prescribed in combination with Candesartan cilexetil, such as ACE inhibitors (although this is not always the case).
