What is Climanor?
Climanor tablets contain the active ingredient medroxyprogesterone, which is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring female sex hormone progesterone. Climanor can, among other things, be used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal women. You can also take medroxyprogesterone to delay periods. Climanor or the medroxyprogesterone pill is a prescription-only medicine.
What is Climanor used for?
Around the age of 45, women’s ovaries gradually stop producing oestrogen. Many women experience uncomfortable symptoms as a result of this, including hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and insomnia. HRT substitutes the hormones that the female body loses during menopause. The doctor will prescribe Climanor together with an oestrogen hormone to help reduce these distressing symptoms. Oestrogen may produce side effects and stimulate the growth of the womb lining. The medroxyprogesterone in Climanor opposes oestrogen’s effect on the womb lining. Climanor is therefore only used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal women who have not had a hysterectomy. You can also take medroxyprogesterone to delay periods.
How to use Climanor
If used in combination with an oestrogen hormone, you will probably only need to use Climanor in the second two weeks of each monthly cycle. Daily dose and duration must be determined by a doctor. Climanor tablets should be swallowed whole with water without chewing. To avoid missing any doses, take them at the same time each day. If used for more than two years, its use should be reviewed by a doctor.
Unless otherwise advised by the doctor, the recommended dose of medroxyprogesterone for HRT in adult women is: one tablet once daily on day 15 – 28 of each monthly cycle. It is important not to exceed the prescribed dose. Read the package leaflet before use.
Climanor may cause side effects, including:
- Irregular periods;
- Periods that stop altogether (usually with continued use);
- Gastrointestinal symptoms;
- Breast tenderness;
Consult a doctor if the side effects are severe or persistent. It is important to be aware that all women using HRT have a slightly increased risk of serious side effects such as cancer and thrombosis compared with women who don’t use HRT. For more information, see the package leaflet.
When not to use Climanor
Climanor is not suitable for everyone and should not be used if:
- You are allergic to medroxyprogesterone or any other ingredient in this medicine;
- You have a known or past history of thrombosis or breast cancer;
- You have a blood, heart or vascular disorder.
Consult a doctor on the use of Climanor if you have a health condition that is not listed above or are currently on medication.
HRT is usually used for treating menopausal symptoms in women who are no longer in the fertile age bracket. Women who don’t fall within this group and are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medicine, unless the doctor advises otherwise. Women who use Climanor for other conditions or are still capable of becoming pregnant should not use it if pregnant. Climanor should not be used while breastfeeding without consulting a doctor first. Warning: Climanor is not a contraceptive pill! If necessary you should use contraception to avoid getting pregnant. Climanor does not affect your ability to drive safely or interact with alcohol.
