Motilium

Motilium is a medication that contains the active ingredient domperidone to help reduce the risk of nausea and vomiting. This medication can be used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, and it may also be administered as an antiemetic, with drugs like apomorphine to prevent you from feeling sick.

What are Motilium tablets?

Motilium is a common form of anti-nausea and sickness medication that is used to protect against feelings sick or discomfort in people with a range of various conditions. This is the branded version of a generic drug called domperidone, which is the active ingredient in Motilium. The active ingredient in a Motilium tablet helps to move the stomach contents through the intestines at a faster pace than normal, which can reduce the possibility of vomiting.

Additionally, this medication can reduce the signals that are sent to the brain that encourage vomiting, meaning that you're less likely to feel as though you need to be sick after taking Motilium. However, the medication will not cure the underlying health issue that is causing nausea or vomiting – you will need to talk to your doctor about a suitable treatment.

What are Motilium tablets used for?

Motilium will not be given to cure nausea or vomiting, as it only treats the symptoms of a condition, not the underlying problem itself. However, some doctors may prescribe this drug if you are having trouble keeping food or water in your stomach because of a gastrointestinal problem or travel sickness. They may also recommend using Motilium if you feel nauseous after taking certain medication that is essential for your recovery from a different illness.

Motilium is intended to cure the symptoms of nausea and sickness very quickly, and it can work well for children over the age of 12 and adults. It is important not to take Motilium if you are breastfeeding, as it passes into breast milk.

How to use Motilium tablets to prevent feelings of nausea and sickness

When your doctor prescribes Motilium for your nausea or sickness problems, they will give you some basic instructions on how to take the medication safely and avoid any unnecessary side effects. You will also be able to find information about how to safely use and store your medication on the leaflet inside of the packet (there is also a link to the patient leaflet at the bottom of the article). It is important to follow the instructions given by your doctor carefully, even if they do not correspond with the information that you find within the medication packet.

Motilium is often prescribed in tablet form, which means that it needs to be taken orally. Generally, it is best to take this medication at least thirty minutes before you plan on eating, or 30 minutes before going to bed at night. You can take Motilium with a glass of water. The medication usually acts fast, so you should start to notice the results straight away. It is important not to take more Motilium than your doctor has prescribed you as this can increase your risk of side effects.

Although your doctor will tell you how long you should be taking Motilium it is generally not a good idea to take anti-sickness medications like this one for longer than 7 days consecutively. If you continue to be sick after taking Motilium, or you do not feel any better after taking the tablets according to your doctor’s instructions for a few days, contact your healthcare professional. They may want to change you to a different anti-sickness medication.

In situations where Motilium is prescribed for a long period, your doctor may wish to perform an ECG on your heart to make sure that it is safe to continues.

What is the correct dosage of Motilium for anti-sickness?

Unless your doctor prescribes otherwise, the most common dose for Motilium 10mg is 1 tablet containing 10mg of domperidone that is taken three times per day. It is also possible to get Motilium as an oral suspension liquid if you have difficulty taking the tablets. This is available in a dosage of 1mg of domperidone for every 200ml of liquid.

The tablets and oral suspension form of Motilium may not be suitable for children under the age of 12. Do not take more of this medication than your doctor prescribes you. If you believe that you may have been accidentally taken an overdose, you should contact an emergency healthcare professional in your area immediately. Symptoms of an overdose may include confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, an irregular heartbeat and rigidity in your muscles.

If you miss a dose of Motilium when you usually take it, make sure that you take your tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose of medication, you can skip the dose entirely and carry on with your schedule as normal. Do not take double the number of tablets you usually take to make up for a missed pill.
