What is Nuvelle?

Nuvelle is a prescription-only medicine containing estradiol and norethisterone, two female sex hormones, and is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Nuvelle reduces the symptoms of menopause by supplementing hormone deficiencies.

What is Nuvelle used for?

Women reach menopause around the age of 45. During this period, their ovaries produce less and less oestrogen, and overall levels decline as a result which can cause distressing symptoms such as:

  • Irregular periods;
  • Hot flushes;
  • Excessive sweating;
  • Dryness of mucous membranes (eyes, vagina and/or mouth);
  • Anxiety;
  • Depression;
  • Insomnia;
  • Pain during sex or loss of libido;
  • Osteoporosis (decrease in bone mass and density).

Nuvelle HRT tablets stabilise oestrogen levels by supplying the body with extra oestrogen (in this case in the form of estradiol) to help reduce menopausal symptoms. Nuvelle HRT also contains a progestogen hormone, norethisterone, which protects the lining of the uterus from side effects. Nuvelle HRT is usually used to treat women who have not had a hysterectomy.

How to use Nuvelle

Nuvelle HRT comes in blister packs containing 28 tablets: 16 white tablets and 12 pink tablets. One white estradiol-only tablet is taken every day for 16 days, then one pink tablet is taken for the next 12 days. The pink tablets contain both estradiol and norethisterone. Most women will have a monthly withdrawal bleed during the fourth week of their cycle. Start the next pack right after you take the last tablet, even if you are still bleeding.

Dosage

Unless otherwise instructed by a doctor, the usual dose in adult women is one tablet once a day. Do not exceed the recommended dose and read the package leaflet carefully before use.

Side effects

HRT preparations can cause side effects. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with Nuvelle HRT tablets:

  • Headache;
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms;
  • Breakthrough bleeding (spotting);
  • Vaginal discharge;
  • Breast tenderness or soreness;
  • Mood swings.

Consult a doctor if these or other symptoms are severe or persistent. Read the package leaflet carefully before use, which will also tell you that all women using HRT have a slightly increased risk of serious side effects such as cancer and thrombosis compared with women who do not.

When not to use Nuvelle

Nuvelle HRT tablets are not suitable for everyone and should not be used if you:

  • Are allergic to estradiol, norethisterone or any other ingredient in this medicine;
  • Have a past history of thrombosis, embolism (blood clot in the lung), liver disease, breast cancer or other hormone-related cancer;
  • Have vaginal bleeding of unknown cause or an overgrowth of the lining of the womb (endometrial hyperplasia);
  • Have a serious kidney or blood disease.

Consult a doctor on the use of Nuvelle HRT tablets if you have a health condition that is not listed above or are currently on medication.

Pregnancy / driving ability / alcohol

Nuvelle HRT tablets are intended for use by menopausal women. Women who are still in the fertile age range should not use Nuvelle if they are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless otherwise instructed by their doctor. Warning: Nuvelle is not a contraceptive pill. If you are still capable of becoming pregnant, you should use a contraceptive as a precaution.

Nuvelle does not interact with alcohol or affect your ability to drive safely.
