What is Regaine?
Regaine is a medicine used for the treatment of hereditary male pattern hair loss. It contains the active ingredient minoxidil, which allows shrunken hair follicles to restore themselves and stops the process of hair loss, creating a fuller and healthier head of hair. This product is available without a prescription.
What is Regaine used for?
Male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, is a hereditary form of hair loss that is characterised by a receding hairline and hair loss on top of the scalp. It is a hereditary condition that is caused by oversensitivity to a male sex hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT gradually shrinks the follicles which, over time, causes them to stop producing hair. Regaine ensures that the hair follicles function optimally and so reduces hair loss, allowing men with androgenic alopecia to have a fuller head of hair.
How to use Regaine
Regaine is available in various forms, including a foam. Regaine foam should only be used on a dry scalp. Wait at least four hours after application before wetting your hair. Apply a small amount of the foam and massage it gently into the affected areas of the scalp with your fingertips. The foam becomes a lotion when it comes into contact with warm skin. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the foam. It may take a while for the benefits of Regaine to appear. If your hair loss has not improved within a few months, consult a doctor. Warning: Regaine foam is highly flammable. Do not smoke and keep away from any naked flame or heat source while your hair is impregnated with the product.
The recommended dose for adults is:
- Apply half a capful twice a day to dry hair and scalp.
If hair growth is stimulated, you will need to keep using Regaine twice a day for the growth to continue. Regrown hair may disappear after you stop using Regaine and the balding process will then continue.
Regaine foam may cause side effects, including:
- Reactions at site of application such as a tingling sensation, itching or skin irritation;
- Temporary hair loss in the initial two to six weeks of treatment. This is a sign that the medicine is working. If shedding persists for longer than six weeks, consult your doctor;
- High blood pressure.
For more information on possible side effects, see the package leaflet.
