Spiriva Respimat is an inhaler based medication for the treatment of COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This condition affects the way the lungs perform, and may also include chronic bronchitis, which causes swelling in the tubes that lead to the lungs.
What is Spiriva Respimat?
Spiriva Respimat is a common treatment prescribed for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Delivered in the form of an inhaler, the medication contains the active substance tiotropium. When tiotropium is inhaled, it helps to relax the muscles in your airways, helping you to breath easily, particularly when your airways are inflamed or narrowed. This drug is prescription only and comes in either a prescription inhaler powder or spray. This substance is not available as a generic drug. In some cases, your doctor may give you Spiriva Respimat as part of a combination therapy intended to reduce your disease flare ups with COPD. Spiriva Respimat is not intended as an immediate treatment for shortness of breath.
When is Spiriva Respimat used?
Spiriva Respimat is a bronchodilator that belongs to a group of drugs known as anticholinergic medications. These substances often work to relax the muscles of your lungs, decreasing and preventing the shortness of breath associated with bronchitis, COPD, and emphysema. Spiriva Respimat is a maintenance medication, which means that you will need to use it every day to reduce your risk of attacks, rather than using this medication to respond to the symptoms of an attack. In some cases, Spiriva Respimat may be used to treat asthma in children over the age of 6 and adults, although in this case it is often prescribed with other treatments.
How do you use Spiriva Respimat?
Spiriva Respimat must be taken according to your doctor's instructions. Do not use more of this substance than your doctor recommends, and do not use it for a longer period of time than your doctor tells you to. It is important to continue taking this substance every day for as long as your doctor advises, even if you feel as though your condition is improving. Spiriva Respimat often comes with instructions printed on a label inside of the packaging, read through these instructions carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions that you may have. Remember that this substance should only be used with an inhaler device. Capsules included to release powders and spray should not be swallowed for any reason. Do not allow the spray or powder from the inhaler to get into your eyes. Wash your eyes very thoroughly and call your doctor if this happens accidentally.
Do not use the inhaler with any other medicine, and make sure that the Respimat inhaler is clean before you use it. Do not turn the clear base on the inhaler before you fill the cartridge in. Put your cartridge into the inhaler, leaving a small portion of the cartridge visible. Flip the cap upwards until it snaps open fully, then turn the base in the direction of the arrows until the system clicks.
When you use this machine for the first time, you will not always be able to deliver the correct dosage of medication with the first puff. With that in mind, prime it by spraying your medication into the air away from your face. To inhale the medication, exhale fully, then place the mouthpiece between your lips. Make sure your tongue and teeth are out of the way. Press down firmly on the release button within the inhaler and breathe naturally through your mouth as deeply as you can. Repeat these steps for the number of puffs your doctor prescribes, then close the cap to keep the device hygienic. The inhaler will be able to show you how many doses you have left. The counter turns red when you are running out of medicine, which should remind you that you need a repeat prescription. Keep the inhaler mouthpiece clean.
What dosages are available?
The dose available for this medication will be different for different patients. Make sure that you follow your doctor's instructions carefully or pay attention to the directions on the bale. If your dose is different to the one suggested by the instructions for Spiriva Respimat, don't change it unless your doctor tells you to.
The amount of medicine you need to use will depend on the strength of the medicine that your doctor prescribes and the number of doses you will take each day. For asthma, the most common dose is once a day, containing 2.5 mcg of medication per puff. If you are taking Spiriva Respimat for COPD, the usual dose is once a day, which will contain 2.5 mcg per puff from the Respimat device. Your doctor may adjust your dosage over time according to your response to treatment. If you forget to take a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skipped the missed dose and carry on as normal.
