Now that the seasons are changing, it’s finally time to leave winter behind us and prepare for spring and everything that goes along with it: longer days, blooming greenery and more sunshine. Spring is the season when nature bursts back into life. But what does this mean for us as people? The effects of the changing seasons on our mental health and emotional well-being are much greater than we may realise.
During the winter months, we tend to be less productive and moodier, while in spring we are more active outdoors. We’re more involved in activities, our agendas are busier and our faces have a healthy glow from being outside more often. Sunlight boosts our mood and energy level. These 5 easy tips will help you leave the winter blues behind and make a healthy and radiant start to spring.
5 easy tips for a healthy and radiant start to spring
#1 Beat spring fatigue by being physically active
Are you feeling tired, irritable and depressed? Is this keeping you from enjoying the spring? Then it’s important to be more physically active. Our body creates vitamin D from direct sunlight on our skin when we’re outdoors. It’s not without reason that Vitamin D is often referred to as ‘the happy hormone’. Because the sun stays lower in the sky and shines less brightly in winter, you could be slightly deficient in Vitamin D by the time spring arrives. Spending time outdoors increases the production of endorphins, the body’s very own natural antidepressant. As a result, you will feel more energised and get an oxygen boost, which in turn improves blood circulation.
#2 Make sure you get enough, and regular, sleep
Moving the clock forward one hour in spring doesn’t just rob you of one hour of sleep, for some people it can throw off their body’s internal clock, too. Try to get at least 7.5 hours of sleep and go to bed at set times if possible. In spring, the sun rises earlier and sets later and there are more hours of daylight. This can make it easier to get up in the morning but more difficult to fall asleep. To keep your energy levels up and tiredness at bay as the seasons change, it’s important to improve your sleeping habits. A good night’s rest starts during the day. Here are five tips that will help you wake up feeling fresh and energetic.
#3 Prepare yourself for hay fever season
Although spring is a lively season it has its downsides, too. Watery eyes, repeated sneezing, runny nose, shortness of breath are common hay fever symptoms. Hay fever can be very troublesome, but it can be managed successfully with proper preparation. Ever heard of the pollen app? Read more interesting tips for beating hay fever here.
#4 Let your hair down more often
Having an active sex life has quite a few health benefits. Being intimate improves your heart and vascular health, lowers cholesterol and strengthens your immune system. What’s more, research has shown that sex lowers the risk of certain types of cancer, including prostate cancer and breast cancer, and also reduces pain. This is because a hormone called oxytocin is released during sex. It’s this ‘love hormone’ that gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. Oxytocin also stimulates the production of ‘happy hormones’ called endorphins. Sex keeps your body fit and healthy, and your relationship strong. All the more reason to put sex on your ‘to do list’ this spring.
#5 Always carry sunscreen wherever you go
The warm spring sun can be treacherous, so be careful if you’re sitting in the garden enjoying the weather. Even if the sun is at its strongest in summer, it’s still pretty easy to develop sun allergies. Our pale winter skin is not yet used to prolonged exposure to the sun. Carrying a small bottle of sunscreen can help prevent red sports or allergic reactions. Help protect yourself by applying sunscreen regularly. This way, your skin can get used to the sun and you won’t get skin damage.
Finally, be aware of the new season, be open to change and enjoy all the good things that spring has to offer. Spring breathes new life and energy into the world around us. Take a deep breath. Smell that? Spring is a fresh start for nature and for you!
