Patient Leaflet(s)

Zineryt is a brand name for a kind of lotion-based antibiotic applied topically to skin. This medication is usually prescribed for the treatment of acne, and contains a combination of zinc acetate and erythromycin.

What is Zineryt?

Zineryt is a form of antibiotic based medication that helps to get rid of bacteria on the skin. This medication includes a blend of two active ingredients, erythromycin, and zinc acetate.

The erythromycin in Zineryt works to eliminate bacteria like Propionibacterium acnes – which is typically associated with acne and other skin conditions. This common form of bacteria feeds on the sebum created in the sebaceous glands of the skin, producing fatty acids and other products that irritate the glands and make them more inflamed. This irritation can often lead to the formation of spots or zits.

By controlling the number of bacteria on the skin, Zineryt helps to reduce the inflammation of the sebaceous glands and allows the epidermis to heal and become smooth again. However, it’s worth noting that most people will need to maintain a consistent treatment with this medication for a while before they see results.

The other active ingredient in Zineryt is zinc. In the past, zinc preparations have been frequently used throughout the world for their skin healing properties. The component that includes zinc within this medication works well with the erythromycin to form a chemical complex that can be absorbed more efficiently into the skin.

When is Zineryt used?

Zineryt is a prescription medication that’s typically used for the treatment of acne and other skin conditions related to the development of spots and zits. This medication is available only on prescription because it contains a form of antibiotic named erythromycin. The antibiotic in this medication stops the growth of bacteria.

There are different brands of this product available on the market, with some that contain a large amount of alcohol. If you have one of the brands that contains alcohol, then this could cause dryness of the skin.

Most people will need to use this medication for at least a period of three months before they begin to see results. This means that it is important for people to be patient with their treatment. In some cases, Zineryt may be used as part of a combination treatment to get rid of more severe cases of acne.

How do you use Zineryt?

Zineryt is a lotion form of medication that should only be used topically. This means that you apply it directly to the area of skin that needs to be treated, rather than taking a tablet and waiting for the medication to spread through the blood stream.

Before you begin using Zineryt, make sure that you read the patient leaflet that is included with the medication. This leaflet should provide you with information on how to use your medication, as well as guidance on what kind of side effects you should be aware of.

Wash and dry the skin that you’re going to be treating before you apply Zineryt. Make sure that you use a mild soap so that you don’t irritate the skin, and pat the skin rather than rubbing or scrubbing it dry. With the applicator that is provided in the bottle, apply enough Zineryt to cover the entire area. You shouldn’t just be applying this lotion to individual blackheads or zits for instance.

Make sure that you avoid getting Zineryt anywhere on your eyelids, lips, nose, or in your mouth. If you get the lotion in any of these areas, then rinse them thoroughly with cool water, or contact a doctor if you’re concerned.

Although it is possible to use cosmetics and moisturizers after you have applied Zineryt, you should wait until the medication has dried first. This means giving it at least five to ten minutes to soak into the skin. Do not wash the skin that you have applied Zineryt straight after the application.

There is no need to cover the skin that you apply Zineryt with any bandages or dressing unless your doctor or consultant tells you otherwise.

What dosages are there?

Zineryt is available in liquid lotion form, often in one size. Your doctor will inform you of how much you need to apply to get the most benefit from this medication. Generally, a thin layer of medication over the affected area will be enough for most people. However, you should use this medication regularly to get the best benefit from it and ensure that you apply your medication every day.

Avoid getting this lotion into your nose, mouth, or eyes when you’re applying it. If you accidentally get the medicine into your eyes or mouth, contact a doctor after rinsing the area.

Your doctor or consultant will usually ask you to apply Zineryt at least once a day. You may be asked to apply a thin layer twice a day if your condition is more significant. You should begin to see results after about 12 weeks of using the medication. If you do not think that your condition is improving, or it seems to be getting worse, speak to a doctor or consultant about other treatment options.

What are the side effects of Zineryt?

Medications provided in topical form are often safer in general than those given in a liquid or tablet format. This is because when you apply a medicine to your skin, less of the active ingredients are absorbed into your blood stream. For a lot of people, Zineryt will be a safe and reliable treatment for acne.

However, just like any medication, it’s important to be aware that Zineryt can cause unintended side effects sometimes. This tends to be the case when you are first using Zineryt and your skin is not yet used to the liquid. The medication can cause redness, burning, itching, peeling, or dry skin. You might also notice slightly oilier skin if your skin is attempting to accommodate for the dryness that the alcohol in Zineryt can create. If any of these effects worsen or persist, speak to a doctor or consultant.

Remember that you will have been given this medication because the benefits for you have been deemed greater than the potential risks. Many people using this medication will not experience any serious side effects. In rare conditions, the use of this medication can sometimes lead to the arrival of other kinds of skin infections, including bacterial and fungal infections. Speak to a doctor or consultant if you notice side effects like:

  • Rashes or itching;
  • Unusual irritation;
  • Pus or leakage from the skin.

It’s very unlikely that you will have a serious allergic reaction to this medication. However, you should seek medical attention immediately if an allergic reaction occurs. Symptoms of an allergic response to Zineryt can include swelling, itching, rashes, and problems with inflammation in the throat, tongue, or face. You might also encounter dizziness or trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of side effects, and you should always check the patient list included with your medication to access more information about potential side effects.

When shouldn’t you use Zineryt?

Most people will respond well to treatment with Zineryt as it is unlikely to cause any serious side effects. However, there may be cases when a doctor or consultant would not recommend this treatment for you.

For instance, you should always answer any questions asked by your consultant or doctor before you begin taking Zineryt. Additionally, it is important to speak to your doctor or consultant if you are allergic to this medication, or any other ingredients. This substance might include inactive ingredients which can also cause other allergic responses.

Speak to your doctor or consultant about your medical history before you begin using this medication, particularly if you have had bad reactions to antibiotics before. Remember that this medication should only be used during pregnancy when it is clearly needed. Discuss the potential benefits and risks with your doctor.

It is not known whether Zineryt can pass into breastmilk at this time, speak to your doctor about whether it’s safe to use this medication when you are nursing.

Does Zineryt interact with other medications?

Zineryt could interact with other medications that you are already using for different conditions. Because of this, it is important to make sure that you keep a list of all the drugs that you are taking. Provide your consultant or doctor with a list of every over the counter medication or prescription drug that you use. Include reference to any herbal remedies or supplements too.

This drug may interact with various skin products, including metronidazole, and disulfiram.

If you are using other topical medications for the treatment of a skin condition at the same time as Zineryt ask your doctor how long you need to leave between applications. Make sure that Zineryt has chance to soak into the skin before applying cosmetics.

Where can you buy Zineryt?

Zineryt is available to purchase online or offline from reputable chemists and pharmacies.

Can I get Zineryt without a prescription?

Zineryt is not safe to acquire or take without a prescription.
