Zithromax is a medication including the active ingredient azithromycin, which is a type of macrolide antibiotic. This medication can help to treat a range of conditions by preventing bacteria from producing the critical proteins that they need to survive.

What is Zithromax?

Zithromax, otherwise known by its generic term, Azithromycin, is a medication used to treat a wide selection of common bacterial infections. This drug belongs to the macrolide antibiotic family, and it works by reducing the growth of bacteria by preventing bacteria from producing crucial proteins required for them to thrive.

This medication is commonly prescribed by doctors to kill an infection, while reducing the symptoms of pain and fever that can occur alongside an infection. This medication will not work for certain viral infections such as the flu. The unnecessary use of this substance could increase your resistance to it.

When is Zithromax used?

Zithromax is available in a range of forms. The prescription drug can come in the form of an oral suspension, oral tablet, eye drop, or even in an intravenous substance. The most commonly prescribed option is the tablet. Usually, this drug will be given to treat a range of bacterial infections, such as STDs like gonorrhea and chlamydia, as well as respiratory infections like bronchitis, ear infections, pneumonia, sinus infections and even laryngitis.

Zithromax can sometimes be given for various skin infections and issues that cause severe diarrhea. Depending on the nature of your condition, your doctor may choose to give you this medication alongside other antibiotics. This is usually the strategy that doctors use when they are treating a form of complex infection. Zithromax works by preventing the bacteria in your body from multiplying, therefore making the infection worse. Because the bacteria in your body are unable to produce crucial proteins required for growth, they die off, and your infection begins to improve.

How do you use Zithromax?

Before taking any medication, including Zithromax, it is important to listen carefully to the instructions that are given by your doctor, and follow the guidelines provided on your medicine leaflet. If you have any concerns about how to use this medication, contact your pharmacist or doctor immediately.

Zithromax is often given in a tablet form, which means that it can be taken by mouth. Follow the guidelines given by your doctor about whether to take this substance with or without food. Some people find that taking Zithromax with food will help them to reduce the risk of an upset stomach.

For the best outcomes with Zithromax, take the drug at evenly spaced times throughout the day. Your doctor will recommend taking your medication at the same time each day, so you don't forget to take it. You may also want to set alarms to help remind you. Make sure that you continue to take this substance until you have finished the full amount prescribed to you. You will need to continue taking Zithromax until your prescribed amount is finished, even if your symptoms clear up.

Stopping any medication too early could allow bacteria to continue growing, which results in an increased number of side effects, and a return of your infection. Antacid medications that contain magnesium or aluminum might decrease your ability to absorb Zithromax. If you take an antacid with this medication, make sure that you wait for two hours before you take this drug.

What dosages are there?

Zithromax needs to be taken regularly and for the full course prescribed to you by your doctor for you to have the best results. Your doctor will tell you what strength of Zithromax and dosage to take depending on your symptoms and your condition. In most cases, Zithromax will be prescribed for between one and five days. In the case of very severe infections, you may need a longer prescription, or you might need to take Zithromax with other medications too.

Zithromax will not be suitable for children under the weight of 45kg. Always follow the dosage as it is prescribed to you by your doctor. Taking more tablets than necessary will not improve your chances of getting rid of your infection faster.

What are the side effects of Zithromax?

It is unusual to have very serious or significant side effects when taking Zithromax. However, like all medications and drugs, it is possible that your body will have an adverse response to this substance. It's important to tell your doctor if you notice any side effects that are persistent, uncomfortable, or worsening.

The most common side effects of Zithromax will be gastrointestinal symptoms, like nausea, stomachache or diarrhea, some people also experience constipation. You may also be more likely to suffer from headaches when taking this medication. If you experience more severe side effects, like sudden issues with your hearing or deafness, or sudden issues with your sight, drooping eyelids, or blurred vision, contact your doctor immediately. It's also important to seek immediate medical attention if you have trouble swallowing or speaking, weakness in your muscles, signs of a liver problem, abdominal or stomach pain, or yellowing eyes or skin.

If you notice an irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness or you begin to have fainting spells, contact an emergency health provider immediately. In rare conditions, this medication might cause an intestinal issue known as clostridium difficile diarrhea. This is caused by a resistant bacteria in your system. The condition may occur during your treatment, or within months of your treatment being stopped. If you have symptoms like blood or mucus in your stool, pain or cramping in your stomach or persistent diarrhea, tell your doctor. Do not use any medications intended to stop your diarrhea.

It is possible that using this medication for prolonged periods of time might lead to new yeast infections or oral thrush. Contact your doctor if you notice any white patches in your mouth or changes in your vaginal discharge.

It is unlikely that you will experience a severe allergic reaction to this medication. However, you should get medical attention immediately if you notice the symptoms of an allergic reaction, including a fever that won't go away, rashes or itching, swelling around your throat, face or tongue, trouble with your breathing and severe cases of dizziness. In some cases, allergic reactions to this drug may still occur after you have stopped using the drug. Keep an eye out for side effects for several days after you take your final dose.

When shouldn't you use Zithromax?

Before you use any medication, including an antibiotic like Zithromax, it is usually a good idea to discuss your medical history, background and condition with your doctor in depth. Some people will not be suitable to use Zithromax, and it is important that your doctor assesses you carefully before prescribing this medication.

If you have ever had a history of kidney disease, liver disease, or muscle diseases in your background or your family, contact your doctor and let them know before using Zithromax. In some cases, the active ingredient in this medication can cause a condition that will affect the rhythm of your heart. This condition, called QT Prolongation might cause serious heartbeat issues, as well as side effects like fainting and dizziness that will require immediate medical attention. Your risk of this heart issue will be increased if you already have medical conditions that affect your heart, such as heart failure, or a slow heartbeat. You may also have a higher risk of dangerous side effects if you're taking other medications that might also cause QT Prolongation.

Tell your doctor if you have a family history of any heart conditions or death caused by sudden cardiac events. Additionally, keep in mind that low levels of magnesium or potassium in your blood could also increase your risk of suffering from QT Prolongation. Your risk levels may increase if you use diuretics or water pills, or if you have conditions that include severe vomiting, diarrhea or sweating.

Zithromax can sometimes cause live vaccines that use bacteria such as the typhoid vaccine to work differently. You should avoid having any vaccinations or immunizations when you're taking this medication until your doctor tells you otherwise.

Does Zithromax interact with any other medications?

It is important to note that some drugs can interact poorly with other substances that you are taking, and therefore increase your risk of dangerous side effects. Drug interactions change the way that your medications work and increase your risk of more dangerous side effects. Make sure that you talk to your doctor about any medications that you are taking before you begin using Zithromax. This includes any over the counter medications, supplements or herbal remedies that you might have started using without your doctor's guidance.

You should also avoid changing the dosage of any medications that you are already taking alongside Zithromax until your doctor tells you that it is safe to do so. Although most antibiotics will not affect your birth control solutions like the patch or pills, some antibiotics can reduce their effectiveness. If you are concerned that this antibiotic might affect your birth control, speak to your doctor and consider using an additional form of contraception.

As with all antibiotics you will need to see a doctor to determine their suitability. Occassionally you will need and examination or tests before your doctor decides on the best treatment, home test kits for sexual infections can be an effective way of detecting certain infections but do not cover the full range of possibilities.
