What is Zithromax?

Zithromax contains the active ingredient azithromycin, which is a type of medicine called a macrolide antibiotic. Azithromycin works by preventing bacteria from producing proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow and replicate. Azithromycin therefore stops the spread of infection and reduces symptoms such as pain and fever.

What is Zithromax used for?

This antibiotic is active against a wide variety of bacteria infections. It is prescribed by doctors for:

  • STDs such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea;
  • Respiratory infections such as pneumonia, middle ear infection, bronchitis, sinus infection, laryngitis;
  • Skin infections;
  • Diarrhoea.

How to use Zithromax

Zithromax is available in tablet or capsule form (250 mg and 500 mg), and should be swallowed whole. It can be taken either with or without food. If you have a sensitive stomach, it is best to take your tablet or capsule with meals. It is important that you finish the entire prescription, even if you feel better. Stopping early could cause the infection to return. If you are using Zithromax for an STD, make sure your partner gets treated too. STDs are contagious! Note: it is not possible to order two prescriptions at once. Due to legislative requirements, your partner will need to place an order him/herself.

Dosage

Strength, daily dose and duration of treatment are determined by your doctor depending on your symptoms. Zithromax is generally prescribed as a one to five-day course. In some cases, a longer prescription may be necessary. Zithromax capsules are not suitable for children weighing less than 45 kg. The suspension should be used for children who weigh under 45 kg. Always follow the prescribed dosage and read the package leaflet closely before use.

Side effects

Zithromax generally has few side effects, but in rare cases it may cause:

  • Gastrointestinal symptoms (stomach ache, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation);
  • Headache;
  • Fungal infections of mucous membranes (vagina, anus, mouth).
Most side effects are mild and will disappear over the course of time. See the package leaflet for more information.

When not to use Zithromax

Zithromax is not suitable for everyone. Do not take this antibiotic if:

  • you are allergic to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics;
  • you are allergic to any other ingredient in this medicine;
  • you are breastfeeding.
Consult your doctor on the use of Zithromax if you have a liver disease, muscle disorder, heart condition or other serious ailment. Zithromax interacts with other medicines, including anticoagulants and migraine medication. It is therefore important to tell the doctor what other medicines you are taking when you order. See the package leaflet for a complete list of contraindications, interactions and warnings.

Do not use Zithromax if you are breastfeeding. This medicine can pass into the breast milk and harm your child. Consult your doctor about taking this medicine if you are pregnant. Zithromax does not interact with alcohol or affect your ability to drive safely.
