What is Fluvastatin?
Fluvastatine is used when the cholesterol level is too high or a combination of too much excess fat and cholesterol in the blood. Also people with an increased risk of heart-vascular problems benefit from the treatment. Fluvastatin belongs to a group of medications that are known as statins. These are lipid (fat) regulating medications, which ensure a lower cholesterol level.
How does fluvastatine work?
Fluvastatin contains the active substance fluvastatin. It inhibits the production of cholesterol in the liver and thus lowers the cholesterol and fat in the blood. It does this by blocking the action of a particular enzyme that is needed to make the lipids. Cholesterol is a chemical compound that the body uses to process fat and transport it through the body. Fats are important for the energy supply in the body. An excess of cholesterol may deposit inside of the blood vessels which causes them to become narrow or blocked. A high cholesterol- or fat level in the blood may be hereditary, but it can also occur because the body produces too much of it or because you eat too much fatty foods.
Dosage and method of administration
Before you begin with the treatment you should follow a cholesterol lowering diet. This should be continued during treatment. Take one tablet daily. The tablets should be swallowed as a whole with a drink of water, and may be taken with or without food at any time of the day. Do try to take the tablet at the same time every day. Results are only shown in a blood test.
