Lumigan is an antiglaucoma preparation. The eye drops contain the active substance bimatoprost, which reduces high pressure in the eye.

Glaucoma is an eye condition where the optic nerve becomes damaged. It is usually caused by fluid building up in the front part of the eye, which increases pressure inside the eye. Glaucoma can lead to loss of vision if left untreated. This medicine works by increasing the amount of liquid that is drained. This reduces the pressure inside the eye.

This medicine is not suitable for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

Lumigan does not contain a preservative. The eye drops come in single-dose containers. Lumigan eye drops should be used every day to work properly. A calendar card is provided in the pack, which will help you to remember to use the drops. Consult the package leaflet for instructions on how to use the calendar card.

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. The general guidelines for use are:

• Wash your hands before use.
• Open the container according to the instructions in the package leaflet. To avoid contamination, do not let the open-end of the single-dose container touch your eye or anything else. The solution should be used immediately after opening.
• Gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket. Turn the single-dose container upside down and squeeze it to release one drop into the affected eye or eyes. Blink your eye or eyes a few times.
• Throw away the single-dose container after you have used it, even if there is some solution left.
• If you wear contact lenses, take your lenses out before using this medicine. Wait 15 minutes after using the drops, and before you put your lenses back in.

Once the pack is opened use within 30 days.

Dosage

The recommended dose in adults is:

• One drop once daily, in the evening, in each eye that needs treatment.

Alcohol/driving

This medicine does not interact with alcohol.

Your sight may become blurred for a short time just after using Lumigan eye drops. You should not drive or use machines until your sight is clear again.

If you use too much/forget to use/stop using Lumigan

If you use more of this medicine than you should, it is unlikely to cause you any serious harm. Put your next dose in at the usual time.

If you forget to use this medicine, use a single drop as soon as you remember, and then go back to your regular routine. Do not use a double dose to make up for the forgotten one.

Do not stop using Lumigan eye drops without consulting a doctor first.

Do not use Lumigan eye drops if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicine (see section 'What Lumigan contains').

When should this medicine be used with caution?

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine if:

• You have any breathing problems.
• You have liver or kidney problems.
• You have had a cataract surgery in the past.
• You have, or have had, low blood pressure or low heart rate.
• You have had a viral infection or inflammation of the eye.

Lumigan may cause your eyelashes to darken and grow, and cause the skin around the eyelid to darken too. These changes may be permanent. The change may be more noticeable if you are only treating one eye.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, ask your doctor for advice before using Lumigan.

This medicine passes into breast milk in small amounts. Therefore, the use of Lumigan is not recommended in breastfeeding mothers. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Other medicines and Lumigan

Tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. This includes medicines obtained without a prescription and herbal medicines.

Medicines can cause side effects, although some people may not experience any. Side effects that are known to be associated with Lumigan include:

Very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):

• Slight redness of the eye (up to 24% of people).

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

• Small breaks in the surface of the eye, with or without inflammation.
• Eye irritation, dry, painful and/or itchy eyes, sensation of something in the eye.
• Longer eyelashes.
• Darker skin colour around the eye.
• Red eyelids.

Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

• Tired eyes.
• Sensitivity to light.
• Iris hyperpigmentation.
• Itchy and swollen eyelids.
• Watery eyes.
• Cystoid macular oedema (swelling of the retina within the eye leading to worsening vision).
• Blurred vision.
• Hair growth around the eye.
• Headache.

The active substance in Lumigan 0.3 mg/ml eye drops for single useis bimatoprost. One ml of solution contains 0.3 mg bimatoprost. Each single-use container contains 0.4 ml of solution.

The other ingredients are: sodium chloride, sodium phosphate dibasic heptahydrate, citric acid monohydrate, purified water. Small amounts of hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide may be added to keep the level of acid (pH levels) normal.
