Onglyza is a glucose-lowering medicine that contains the active ingredient saxagliptin, a so-called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. Onglyza works by slowing the rate of digestion, allowing the pancreas more time to release insulin. This also gives the body more time to absorb glucose after meals. These two main actions help control blood sugar spikes after eating.

What is Onglyza?
Onglyza is a glucose-lowering medicine that contains the active ingredient saxagliptin, a so-called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. Onglyza works by slowing the rate of digestion, allowing the pancreas more time to release insulin. This also gives the body more time to absorb glucose after meals. These two main actions help control blood sugar spikes after eating.
What is it used for?
Onglyza is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. This type of diabetes is characterised by insufficient secretion of insulin by the pancreas and a resistance to the activity of insulin. As a result, the glucose level in the blood rises, causing symptoms as increased thirst, fatigue, frequent urination and slow-healing sores or cuts. It is important for patients with diabetes to keep their blood sugar levels under control in order to minimise these symptoms and prevent (serious) complications. Onglyza helps maintain stable blood sugar levels.
How to use Onglyza
Onglyza tablets should be swallowed whole with some liquid at about the same time each day, preferably with meals to avoid stomach distress. If you have forgotten to take a dose of Onglyza, you may take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Never take a double dose to make up for the forgotten one.
Dosage
Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, the usual dose for adults aged 18 and above is:
- One tablet, once daily.
The duration of treatment is decided by your doctor. Always follow the prescription exactly - never take more or less than your doctor recommends.
Side effects
Onglyza may have side effects, although not everyone gets them. The most commonly reported side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal symptoms or loss of appetite;
- Headache;
- Common cold symptoms, such as a sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose and coughing;
- Blurred vision (during the first few days of treatment), dizziness.
See package leaflet for more side effects, warnings and contraindications.
When not to use this medicine
Onglyza is not suitable for everyone. Do not use this medicine if:
- You are allergic to saxagliptin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
Consult a doctor on the use of Onglyza if:
- You have type 1 diabetes;
- You have a disease affecting the pancreas or a history of this;
- You are already taking other glucose-reducing drugs (e.g. insulin);
- You have a heart, kidney or liver condition or other health problems.
Onglyza may interact with some medicines. The doctor will have a list of medicines that you should avoid mixing it with. For more information on contraindications, interactions and warnings, see the package leaflet.
Pregnancy/driving ability/alcohol
Do not use Onglyza if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor about alternative glucose-lowering medications.
Onglyza may cause dizziness or impaired vision. Stay out of traffic if you experience these side effects.
Alcoholic drinks tend to lower your blood sugar, increasing the risk of a hypo. You should therefore reduce or stop alcohol consumption while taking Onglyza. To avoid blood sugar fluctuations you should never drink alcohol on an empty stomach.
