What is Actonel?
Actonel is a drug used to treat osteoporosis. The active ingredient sodium risedronate (risedronic acid) belongs to the so-called bisphosphonates: medicines that counteract the loss of bone density and make the bones stronger. You can order Actonel online at the pharmacies that work with Dokteronline.com.
How is the medicine used?
Doctors prescribe Actonel primarily for osteoporosis or the loss of bone density. This means that the body breaks down more than bone tissue with the result that the bone structure becomes less firm and the bones break more easily. The back vertebrae are also affected and may become weak and collapse. Symptoms include back pain, a curved spine, a reduced height, and muscle, organ or nerve pain.
Osteoporosis is more common with increasing age. Women during or after the menopause are more susceptible to osteoporosis because their oestrogen content decreases. This causes more bone tissue to break down.
Other causes of osteoporosis include:
- Lack of vitamin D
- A poor diet too low calcium
- Lack of exercise
- Certain conditions or the use of certain medicines.
Actonel binds to the bone tissue, which makes it stronger. This reduces the risk of bone fractures and collapsed vertebrae.
How do you take Actonel?
Actonel should always be taken on an empty stomach. Swallow the tablet whole with a large glass of tap water. Don't eat and drink anything for at least half an hour. Actonel contains substances that irritate the oesophagus. It is, therefore, very important that the tablet should be taken whilst standing or sitting upright. You should remain sitting or standing up for the first hour. If you lie down the oesophagus can become irritated and the risk of oesophagal inflammation increases.
Dosage
You can buy Actonel online at the co-operating pharmacies. Unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor, the usual dose is as follows:
- Postmenopausal women (for treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis): 1 tablet of 5 mg once a day.
Actonel is also available in other strengths (30 mg/35mg). For these variants, another dosage recommendation applies. Read the instructions before use.
Side effects
Actonel can sometimes cause side effects. These include symptoms such as:
- Headaches
- Gastrointestinal complaints (such as burning stomach acid, stomach or abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea)
- Pain in bones, joints and/or muscles
- Ocular inflammation (in the iris).
If you experience any of these or other side effects, talk to a doctor or pharmacist. You will find a complete overview of all possible side effects in the leaflet.
When should you not use this medicine?
Actonel is not a suitable medicine for everyone. Do not use this medicine if you:
- Experience hypersensitivity to sodium risedronate or to any of the excipients in the tablet.
- Experience sore throat problems or if you cannot swallow properly.
- Suffer from severe kidney problems.
- Have a low calcium content in the blood.
Do not sit for at least 1 hour or stand up after taking the tablet.
