Amias is a brand name for a tablet containing the active ingredient candersartan. Candersartan, or candersartan cilexetil, is a medication known as an angiotensin II antagonist. This medication helps with things like lowering blood pressure. The active ingredient in Amias works by preventing the behaviour of a specific hormone in the human body known as angiotensin II. While angiotensin II is a natural substance, in some cases it can cause problems. Normally, this substance acts on special receptors in the human body, to create two specific results. The first thing that this hormone does is cause the blood vessels in your body to narrow. Angiotensin also causes the production of another hormone in the body known as aldosterone. Aldosterone causes water and salt to be retained more by the kidneys, which can increase the amount of fluid in the blood vessels, leading to higher blood pressure. Amias and its generic form work by blocking the receptors that angiotensin affects. This relaxes blood vessels and creates less resistance, so blood pressure begins to reduce. Amias also reduces the action of the aldosterone hormone in the kidneys. The result is an increase in the amount of fluid that can be removed from the blood by the kidneys.Amias is a brand-name version of a product called candersartan cilexetil. The active ingredient in this medication can sometimes be purchased in its generic form. Amias is a special kind of medication called an angiotensin II blocker. What is Amias?
Amias is a brand name for a tablet containing the active ingredient candersartan. Candersartan, or candersartan cilexetil, is a medication known as an angiotensin II antagonist. This medication helps with things like lowering blood pressure. The active ingredient in Amias works by preventing the behaviour of a specific hormone in the human body known as angiotensin II.

When is Amias used?
The combined effect that the active ingredient in Amias has on your body and angiotensin II makes significant changes to your blood pressure. Amias can significantly reduce the blood pressure in a person who suffers from higher than usual blood pressure. Additionally, in some cases, this medication can be used to improve the outlook for someone suffering from heart failure.
If you have been a victim of heart failure, or another cardiac issue like a heart attack, then your doctor may prescribe Amias to you to help ensure that your heart can work properly. Lowering the amount of pressure in the blood vessels means that the heart won’t need to work as hard to pump blood around the body, so you’re less likely to have another cardiac condition.
Amias is only available as a prescription medication for the treatment of heart failure and high blood pressure. In some cases, Amias can be used as a part of a combination therapy with other drugs to protect the heart.
How do you use Amias?
Amias is a prescription medication. When you receive this medication from a doctor or consultant, you will be given information how to use it safely to get the best results. Crucially, it is important to take your consultant’s advice seriously when using this medication. You may also find it helpful to read the patient leaflet provided with your medication when you receive Amias.
The patient leaflet included in this medication will provide you with some extra information on how to take your tablets, and what you can do to avoid side effects. Amias is usually taken on a daily basis, and you will have a better chance of remembering to take your pill if you use it at the same time every day. Amias tablets can be taken either with or without food. Some people find that taking their medication with food helps them to avoid feelings of nausea.
If you forget to take a dose of Amias at your intended time, you will need to take your next dose as usual when it’s due. Do not attempt to double up on Amias to make up for a missed tablet.
Your doctor will also check your kidney function before and 1–2 weeks after initiating or adjusting the dosage of the medication as it can have a negative effect on their functioning.
What dosages are there?
Amias comes in a range of different dosages, and your doctor or consultant will advise you on which one you will need to use according to your condition. Amias tablets can be given in doses of 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 mg. The right strength for you will depend on various things, but you will usually be started at a lower dose and adjusted upwards if necessary.
The usual dose is a single tablet taken once per day. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, you should not take more of this medication. Crucially, it’s worth noting that you will need to keep taking this medication every day. If you stop taking this medication, then your blood pressure may increase again. Additionally, keep in mind that Amias can sometimes cause you to feel sleepy or dizzy. Be careful when using Amias.
What are the side effects of Amias?
Amias, like other medications, can sometimes cause side effects alongside its intended effects. It’s worth being aware of the side effects that could occur when taking a particular medication, so you know how to respond. Crucially, you should always seek help from a medical professional if you are concerned by your response to a drug. Even if a side effect is not listed on your patient leaflet, it can be worth asking for advice about it.
The most common side effects of Amias will happen when you first begin taking the medication. These side effects are more common in children and younger people, and may include:
- Dizziness and spinning headache or migraine;
- Infections in the throat, sinuses, lungs or airways.
In slightly more rare circumstances, you may feel sick when taking this medication, or experience a cough. Pain in your muscles, back or joints is common with Amias, and skin reactions can occur, such as hives and rashes. You should make sure that you are aware of any symptoms that may be caused by issues with your liver, such as inflammation. Decreased kidney function could present in the yellowing of the eyes or skin, as well as in changes in your urination habits. In very rare circumstances, Amias may cause a reduction in the number of white blood cells in your blood, and it can also cause an increased level of potassium in the blood. Amias might lead to decreased sodium in the blood too.
When shouldn’t you use Amias?
This medication might not be suitable for everyone. If you have suffered heart failure or reduced kidney function, then you may need to take caution when using Amias.
In some cases, your doctor will recommend not using this medication. For instance, you should not use Amias if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Amias is not suitable for people with severely impaired liver function, or in people with bile conditions and rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance. The safety of this medication in treating children under the age of six has not been fully established. You will need to ensure that it is safe for a child to take this medication by speaking to a specialist.
Sometimes, you will be able to take Amias, but only if you agree to further monitoring by your doctor. For instance, if you have had heart failure or decreased kidney function in the past, your doctor might want you to take regular blood tests to monitor the levels of creatinine and potassium in your blood. People who have decreased fluid volume in their body caused by dehydration should use Amias with caution, so too should those with kidney disease or decreased kidney function.
Avoid using this medication if you have poor liver function, or diseases in the blood vessels in and around the brain. You may not be suitable to take Amias if you have a heart condition that causes poor blood flow to the heart, or if you have had a heart disease issue in the past that is characterised by thickening in the internal heart muscle.
Does Amias interact with other medications?
Medications can sometimes interact poorly with other substances that you might be taking to manage various health conditions. When you are having your consultation, it is important that your doctor is aware of all the medications that you are already using. Be sure that you mention any of the substances that you have been given on prescription, as well as over-the-counter drugs and herbal remedies. You will need to check every substance to ensure that the combination is safe.
This medicine can have an additive effect on other medicines that decrease your blood pressure. This can lead to an increased risk of side effects like dizziness. Make sure that your consultant knows if you are using any other medication to manage your blood pressure.
Amias can also increase the levels of potassium in your blood. If you are using this substance with other medications that increase blood potassium, the side effects may be enhanced. Because of this, your doctor may need you to monitor your blood potassium levels carefully.
Amias may not work properly when taken with NSAIDs like ibuprofen and aspirin. These medications can reduce the blood pressure lowering effects of Amias and can raise your risks of side effects that harm your kidney function. Additionally, Amias can increase your blood levels of a medication called lithium. It is not a good idea to take Amias with lithium.
This is not a complete list of possible interactions that can occur with Amias.
Where can you buy Amias?

It is important that this medication only be initiated by your own doctor and you are regularly monitored.

Amias cannot be obtained without a prescription, as in some cases it may be dangerous to take.
