About Desloratadine

Desloratadine is an antihistamine, a medicine that counteracts allergic reactions in the body.

Desloratadine relieves symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal passages caused by an allergy, hay fever or allergy to dust mites). These symptoms include:

  • Runny nose.
  • Sneezing.
  • Itchy nose, itchy palate.
  • Itchy, red or watery eyes.

Desloratadine is also used to relieve symptoms of urticaria (a skin condition caused by an allergy). These symptoms include itching and hives.

How to use Desloratadine

Desloratadine tablets should be taken with a drink of water. Do not chew the tablet. This medicine can be taken with or without food.


Dosage varies per person and is determined by a doctor for each specific patient depending on the symptoms. The general guidelines for use are listed below.

  • Adults and adolescents aged 12 years of age and above: the recommended dose is one tablet once a day.

The doctor will tell you how long you need to use this medicine. This medicine is not suitable for use in children under 12 years of age. For more information on how to use this medicine, see the package leaflet.


At the recommended dose, this medicine is not expected to affect your ability to drive or use machines. In the unlikely event that you do feel dizzy or drowsy, you should avoid driving until the symptoms have passed.

This medicine does not interact with alcohol.

If you take more Desloratadine than you should or miss a dose

If you take more Desloratadine tablets than you were told to, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

If you forget to take your dose on time, you may take it as soon as you remember to, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

When not to use Desloratadine

Do not use Desloratadine if you are allergic to the active substance desloratadine, to loratadine or to any of the ingredients in this medicine (see section 'What Desloratadine contains').

When should this medicine be used with caution?

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Desloratadine if you have poor kidney function.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Desloratadine is not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Other medicines and Desloratadine

There are no known interactions of Desloratadine with other medicines.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

Side effects

Medicines can cause side effects, although some people may not experience any.

If you experience any of the following side effects stop using this medicine and seek medical help immediately:

  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., difficulty in breathing, wheezing, itching, hives and swelling of the face, lips or tongue).

Other side effects that are known to be associated with Desloratadine include:

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Tiredness.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Headache.

Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people):

  • Severe allergic reactions.
  • Skin rash.
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat/palpitations.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms (stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea).
  • Dizziness.
  • Muscle ache.
  • Drowsiness
  • Hallucinations.
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia).
  • Fits (seizures).
  • Abnormal liver function tests.
  • Inflammation of the liver (hepatitis).
  • Restlessness.

Frequency not known:

  • Increased sensitivity of the skin to the sun, even in the case of hazy sun, and to UV light, for instance to UV lights of a solarium.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet.

What Desloratadine contains

The active substance in Desloratadine Glenmark 5 mg is desloratadine. Each tablet contains 5 mg desloratadine.

The other ingredients are: microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, maize starch, colloidal anhydrous silica, magnesium stearate.
