Indapamide is a type of medication called a diuretic. The medication helps to remove more water from the body in the form of urine, helping to reduce blood pressure and improve the performance of the heart.

What are Indapamide tablets?

Indapamide is a medication called a diuretic. Otherwise known as water pills, diuretics help people to expel more urine from their body, getting rid of excess liquid that might be increasing their blood pressure.

Indapamide works by forcing the body to remove extra water and salt from your system in the form of urine. The less excess water you have in your blood, the less your heart needs to work to pump blood around the body, reducing your blood pressure.

Indapamide comes in tablet form, however, the pills can either be immediate release or slow release, which means that they deliver their benefits over an extended period. Indapamide is only available on prescription and may sometimes be given as part of a combination of treatments.

What are Indapamide tablets used for?

Indapamide is prescribed as an ongoing treatment for people with hypertension, or high blood pressure. Although high blood pressure doesn’t always cause symptoms on its own, it can increase your chances of dangerous side effects like strokes, heart attacks, and problems with kidney function.

Indapamide can also be prescribed as part of a treatment for excess fluid in the body that has been caused by heart failure. Reducing your blood pressure reduces the impact on your heart and helps you to avoid further issues with cardiac arrests. Indapamide can be taken by adults over the age of 18.

How to use Indapamide tablets to treat high blood pressure

Indapamide is available in tablet form either 1.5mg or 2.5mg, and it can be taken either with or without food, depending on the directions given by your doctor. It is important to read the patient leaflet provided with this medication before you begin taking it. Your leaflet will contain information on how to take the medication properly, and how you can avoid certain side effects (see bottom of article for links to leaflets).

Indapamide is usually taken in the morning because if you take this medication too close to your regular bedtime it can disrupt your sleep. Indapamide causes you to urinate more, which means that you would need to get out of bed more often. You should take Indapamide at least four hours before going to bed.

It’s important to note that Indapamide needs to be taken regularly every day for you to benefit from it. You should take it at the same time each day to help you remember. It’s important to continue taking Indapamide for as long as your doctor tells you to do so, even if you feel well. Most people don’t feel sick when they have high blood pressure. However, it can take several weeks for the benefits of this medication to kick in.

If you also take medications to lower your cholesterol when you are using Indapamide, make sure that you take this medication at least four hours after, or four hours before using this medication.

Tell your doctor if your condition worsens or doesn’t get better after a few weeks of taking Indapamide.

What is the correct dosage for Indapamide high blood pressure tablets?

The Indapamide dosage that you are given will depend on several factors, including your condition and your medical background. You will usually be asked to take a single tablet once a day, in the morning to avoid disrupting your sleep. Indapamide is not intended for children or young adults under the age of 18 unless a doctor or medical consultant tells you otherwise.

Does Indapamide have any side effects?

Indapamide can sometimes cause side effects alongside its intended benefits. Your doctor or medical consultant will have considered the side effects that are possible with Indapamide carefully before giving you this medication. If you have been prescribed Indapamide that is because the benefit to you is seen as greater than the risk.

The most common side effects of Indapamide will diminish by themselves as your body continues to get used to the medication. These common side effects include headaches and dizziness. If these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

In some cases, Indapamide can cause a loss of too much water in the body, which leads to dehydration. Symptoms of dehydration and mineral loss can include extreme thirst, dry mouth, weakness or cramps in your muscles, irregular or fast heartbeat, confusion and decreased urination.

It is important to tell your doctor if you have severe side effects, including:

  • Severe dehydration;
  • Pain in your eyes;
  • Problems with your vision.

In some circumstances taking Indapamide with other medications could cause your blood pressure to drop too low, which could lead to feelings of weakness, fatigue, or discomfort. You may also experience dizziness. Seek a doctor’s advice if any of these side effects happen.

A serious allergic reaction to Indapamide is not likely, however, you should seek medical assistance immediately if you notice any signs of an allergic response when taking Indapamide. Allergic reactions can present with itching, rashes, trouble breathing, swelling in the tongue, face or throat, and dizziness.

This is not a complete list of all side effects that can occur when you are taking Indapamide. If you notice any other side effects while using this medication, speak to your doctor.

When should you not use Indapamide tablets?

Indapamide may not be the right treatment for everyone with hypertension or high blood pressure. It is important to answer any questions that your consultant or doctor asks you carefully when using this medication to ensure that it is the right treatment for you.

Tell your doctor or consultant if you are allergic to Indapamide or if you have any other allergies. This product can contain inactive ingredients which may also lead to an allergic response.

Before taking Indapamide tell your doctor if you have ever had a history of gout, kidney problems, diabetes, lupus, or liver disease. It is worth mentioning these issues if they run in your family, even if you haven’t had symptoms yourself.

Severe vomiting, sweating or diarrhoea might increase your chances of a serious case of dehydration when taking Indapamide. Report these conditions to your doctor or pharmacist. To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of fluids. Make sure that if you have diabetes, your doctor is aware before you begin taking Indapamide.

Indapamide tablets can affect your blood sugar and make it harder to manage your diabetes. Check your blood sugar regularly according to your doctor’s instructions, and provide them with information about your readings. If you experience symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased urination and thirst, then you might need to adjust your medication for diabetes when taking Indapamide.

In some cases, Indapamide can decrease the levels of potassium in your blood. Before you begin using salt substitutes or potassium supplements, ask your doctor or pharmacist about taking them with Indapamide.

This medication can make some people more sensitive to the sun. Because of this, you may need to limit your time in the sun, and avoid visiting tanning salons. Wear plenty of sunscreen when using Indapamide, and use protective clothing outdoors. If you get burns or blisters, tell your doctor immediately.

Pregnancy/driving ability/alcohol

During pregnancy, Indapamide is not generally used. It should only be taken when advised specifically by your doctor. Ask your doctor about all of the options. Your doctor or medical consultant may be able to suggest an alternative to Indapamide if it is not the right treatment for you.

This medication can sometimes cause dizziness. Alcohol and other drugs can make your feelings of dizziness worse. Make sure that you do not drive or use machinery until you feel well enough to do so when using Indapamide. Limit your intake of alcoholic drinks.

Does Indapamide interact with other medications?

As with most medicines Indapamide can sometimes interact with the other medications that you are using for the treatment of various conditions. Interactions change how your medication works and can increase your chances of dangerous side effects. This document does not provide a complete list of all interactions.

Make sure that you keep a complete list of all the products that you’re using, as well as non-prescription and prescription medication, so you can provide them to your doctor or consultant when requested. Make sure that you keep a list of herbal supplements and other remedies too.

Medication like lithium and dofetilide can interact negatively with Indapamide. Some products also have ingredients that can increase your blood pressure or make your chances of heart failure worse. Speak to your doctor or consultant about what products you are using and how you can use them safely. This is particularly true for cough and cold medications, NSAIDs, and diet medications.

Indapamide can sometimes affect the way that certain lab tests work, increasing your chances of incorrect results. Ensure that all of your doctors are aware that you’re using this medication.

Where can you buy Indapamide?
