QVAR

QVAR is an inhalation medication containing corticosteroids (adrenocortical hormones). The medication works anti-inflammatory and ensures that the respiratory tract becomes less sensitive to stimuli.

What is QVAR used for?

QVAR is prescribed for asthma and COPD to prevent attacks of breathlessness.

How to use QVAR?

The active substance of QVAR enters your lungs when you take a puff. The QVAR puffs should be evenly distributed throughout the day. Always rinse your mouth thoroughly after you administer this medication.

QVAR is available in the following variants:

• QVAR Aerosol Inhaler (administered by pressing atomizer during inhalation, may be combined with a spacer)
• QVAR Autohaler (administered by strong inhalation through the mouthpiece)
• QVAR Easi-Breathe (administered by strong inhalation via mouthpiece)

Note: It is important that you use QVAR every day, even if you have no symptoms. Usually it takes several days before you notice if this drug has an effect.

Dosage

All QVAR variants are available in doses of 50 and 100 micrograms per inhalation. Your doctor will decide which strength is right for you. The usual starting dose for adults and children over 5 years is 1 puff, twice a day. Always follow the advice of the doctor.

A missed dose can taken at a later time, unless it is almost time for another dose. See leaflet for directions.

Side effects

When you use QVAR, the following side effects may occur (see leaflet for a complete list):

• sore throat, fungal infections in the mouth and / or pharynx. You can prevent this by rinsing your mouth well after each use, and by brushing your teeth or by eating something.
• increase in shortness of breath after inhalation (ask your doctor)

Talk to the doctor if you have side effects, or if you develop other symptoms.

When should you not use QVAR (contraindications)

Do not use QVAR if you are hypersensitive to the active substance beclomethasone dipropionate or any of the excipients used. Talk to your doctor about using QVAR if you have a serious condition.

Pregnancy / breastfeeding

It is safe to use QVAR during pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Interaction with other drugs

There are no known interactions of QVAR with other medications. Do always inform your doctor or pharmacist about other medications.

Driving

QVAR will not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.

Alcohol

There are no restrictions regarding the use of alcohol in combination with QVAR.
