Xylocaine

Xylocaine contains the active ingredient lidocaine, which is a type of medicine called a local anaesthetic. This medicine prevents the nerves in the skin from sending pain signals to the brain and is used to numb areas that would otherwise feel pain.

Products with lidocaine are used to numb a localised area to prevent pain. Xylocaine is used for various procedures and conditions, such as:

• Medical procedures (to stitch up a wound or insert an intravenous drip);
• Tattoos and piercings;
• Haemorrhoids (painful, itchy bulging lumps around the anus);
• Hives or insect bites;
• Nerve pain.

Topical anaesthetic is also used by some men suffering from premature ejaculation. The active ingredient lidocaine makes the head of the penis less sensitive to sexual stimulation, which makes it easier to delay ejaculation.

Xylocaine is available in various forms, including cream and spray. After application, the area becomes numb within minutes and the effect lasts a few hours. This product should be applied thinly and evenly to the skin. If the cream is used to treat premature ejaculation, you should be especially careful as too much anaesthetic cream can cause complete loss of sensation in the glans. It is also important to wear a condom to prevent genital numbness in your partner. Do not apply this product to broken skin and avoid contact with the eyes. Wash your hands immediately after applying the product.

Xylocaine for scar pain:
Xylocaine can also be used to treat scar pain. Painful scars can occur after certain surgeries, such as a mastectomy, heart and kidney surgery, shoulder operations and surgery on the lungs or an inguinal hernia. The pain is usually caused by a damaged nerve branch or a nerve branch that gets trapped by the scar. Scar pain is constantly present and worsens with superficial contact. Xylocaine temporarily numbs the scar so that the pain disappears.

Use and duration should be determined by a doctor. The general recommended dose for adults is:

• For haemorrhoids – apply thinly twice a day and after each bowel movement;
• For itching and (nerve) pain – use as needed. Do not use more than 5 to 10 grams at a time, and leave at least eight hours between doses;
• For other conditions, purposes or use in children the appropriate dosage regimen should be determined by a doctor. See the package leaflet for more dosage information.

Xylocaine is generally well-tolerated, but in some cases, it may cause mild side effects such as:

• Skin irritation such as redness, and itching or burning at the application site (after the anaesthetic wears off).

Consult a doctor if the side effects are bothersome or if you experience side effects that are not listed on the leaflet.

Xylocaine should not be used if you are hypersensitive to lidocaine or any other ingredient in this product. People who suffer from epilepsy, cardiac arrhythmia, or have a heart, liver or kidney condition or another disease should consult a doctor before using this product. Xylocaine may interact with other medicines. The doctor will have a list of medicines that you should avoid mixing it with.

Xylocaine is safe to use during pregnancy, provided the dose is not exceeded. Do not apply the cream to your nipples while breastfeeding.

This product does not interact with alcohol or affect your ability to drive safely.
