What is Tamsulosin?

Tamsulosin (active ingredient: tamsulosin) is a type of medicine called an alpha-blocker. It works by blocking alpha receptors that are found in the muscle in the prostate gland. This action causes the muscle in the prostate to relax, which relieves pressure on the urethra and allows urine to flow freely past the prostate gland, making it easier to pass urine.

What is Tamsulosin used for?

Tamsulosin tablets are used to relieve the urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). The prostate is a gland found only in men. It often enlarges with age, pressing on the urethra and obstructing the flow of urine from the bladder. This can cause various symptoms such as difficulty passing urine, dribbling of urine after urinating and needing to pass urine more often or urgently. Tamsulosin tablets relax the smooth muscle in the prostate and urethra, making it easier to pass urine and empty the bladder, which in turn, reduces the urinary symptoms.

How to use Tamsulosin

If you have forgotten to take a dose, you may take the missed dose unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Never take a double dose to make up for the forgotten one.
