Menopause, also known as 'the change of life' is an important phase in a woman's life in which her body undergoes a number of radical changes. The most important change is that a woman's ovaries stop the production of the female hormone oestrogen. These hormonal changes can have a profound effect on the body, causing menopausal symptoms such as mood changes, hot flashes and irritability or increased frustration.
Women start menopause at different ages. Some women experience signs of menopause in their early forties, others may go through menopause up to 15 years later. In most cases, the first signs are irregular menstrual periods (more/less bleeding, shorter/longer periods). Other signs and symptoms include hot flashes, sleep problems, energy loss, muscle or joint problems and reduced sex drive.
The majority of women experience mild to serious menopausal symptoms during menopause. However, there are things you can do, such as eating healthily and taking supplements, to ease some of the unwelcome symptoms associated with it.
